AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE **** Howdy folks and welcome to the Sunday session here on baliwaves.com ! Today started off normally heading down for the 6.30am surf check on the Outer Reefs of Tuban . Wave height had appeared to have backed off slightly but was still breaking in the 2-3ft range between Kuta Reef and Airport Left . The tide was almost at the bottom of the Low and surfing conditions were looking real good with the aid of a 2-4knot off-shore Easterly breeze. There wasn’t anyone surfing at Kuta Reef , being just a touch too small. But across on Middle Reef there were a couple of surfers scoring some head high peelers to them selves. Airport Left as usual already had a dozen surfers out there with wave height in the waist high class. I bee lined it to my local “warung” for a 15 cent cup of coffee then grabbed the camera equipment and rode off in the direction of Uluwatu . As I passed the bridge over Padang Padang I couldn’t help but notice the 2-3 foot lines bending down the reef at Impossible’s with no one in the water catching em. Another 10 minutes later I was at Uluwatu . It was a pretty sight to see 3-5ft ever so straight lines hitting the Main Peak . But the action was on the Racetrack section while the tide was still low. Sometime around 10.00am the wind shifted further around to the SE and started to increase to Tradewind strength. As the tide started to push back in the Main Peak was producing some absolutely sick barrels for local stand out surfer Made Lapur and Uluwatu lifeguard Ketut Pitur. Temple ’s also started to fire up on the incoming and there was a solid crew of around 25 surfers all over it. As the tide started to get towards the top of the high it was looking a bit too full and a much longer wait between the set waves. That was my signal to pack up and head back to Tuban. Just by looking at these latest images I’ve loaded ya’s should be able to tell that I was shooting with the Cannon XL2 video camera and that also means I’m gunna have some even sicker video clips to load up for ya’s first thing tomorrow morning, it’s been a long day (currently 4.30pm in Bali). Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa ; Made sms’d through his 7.00am surf check from over at Lakey Peak and said that wave height has also dropped off a touch, back down into the 2ft range for the 15 surfers that were in the water at the time. He also mentioned that the total number of visiting surfers in the area has jumped up to 80, yes, that’s what I said, 80.
Kandui Surf Resort / Mentawai islands 21st April ’07 ; Back from a few day stay in Padang taking care of some business and hanging out with my gal. They say there was some fun waves while I was gone. The swell came up a bit yesterday and they were surfing some overhead Nipusi and Bankvaults, and one guest said he even got a few waves at Rifles. Saw some pictures of Jevon making some sick turns at Nipusi. MAN that guy can surf! Today was only a bit smaller. The winds were out of the northwest this morning, then turned straight north and got a bit strong around mid day. The crew surfed Nipusi all morning, the old guests surfing it early by themselves with the new guests taking the second shift. It was overhead and offshore. One guest surfed Rifles and said he had to wait a long time for waves, but got one good barrel out of the deal so it was worth it. In the afternoon, the wind backed down and the crew had an afternoon surf at Nipusi again, where it was only a little smaller than this morning, but still glassy and fun. A few of the guys went out to 4 Bobs There was not too many waves, but when they came in it was really clean and fun. Sets were about shoulder high. Expecting smaller surf tomorrow.
