AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE **** Howdy folks and welcome back for another look at what we’ve been scoring surf wise here in Bali today . I didn’t get down to the beach for the surf check of the Outer Reefs until 8.30am this morning and was happy to still see plenty of swell hitting all three sections. The ESE-SE off-shore Tradewind started blowing from first light so surfing conditions were perfect along Bali’s West Coast from Legian to Uluwatu . Kuta Reef where I’ve been shooting photos for the last two days was once again breaking perfectly in the 2-4ft+ range and was by far the best wave happening around this part of the island. It was probably also the most crowded with the numbers getting up around the 45 mark. But well worth it all the same. I waited until the tide was starting to run back out around 11.30am before dropping anchor in the channel and started blasting away with the 600mm and 14mega pix SLR. Further down the line at Middle Reef wave height was still pushing 5ft+ on the bigger set waves and when we cruised past there were only around a dozen surfers sitting in the line up. Down towards the Airport runway Airport Left was also breaking pretty well non stop in the 2-4ft range with something like 40 surfers hanging on the take off zone. I reckon there woulda been plenty of waves breaking around the other side of the runway at Airport Right but the wind woulda been way too strong for it. You could also bet your last dollar that the crew staying down on the Southern end of the island would have been able to take their choice of locations from Balangan, Bingin, Dreamland or Uluwatu . Weather wise there was a bit of cloud hanging about earlier but basically it’s turned out to be just another hot and sunny day around Tuban. I’m thinking wave height might back off a touch for tomorrow morning before we feel a new swell hitting the reefs anytime in the next 24-48hrs . I’ll give ya’s the run down tomorrow with the baliwaves.com Sunday session so if ya need some inspiration make sure ya drop in to see what’s happening here on the most surf riddled holiday island your ever gunna find.
Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa; Over at Lakey Peak Made sms’d through that wave height has dropped down slightly in size, but still respectable at 2-4ft on The Peak. No wind present at the time so surfing conditions were ultra clean and glassy for the 15 surfers that were riding the perfect Left and Rights on The Peak. While across the channel at Lakey Pipe there were another 5 surfers fine tuning their tube riding skills. There was also plenty of surfer traffic making the 1.5km trek down the beach to the World class Right Hander called Periscopes. Quite a few surfers checked out of Lakey’s yesterday dropping the total number of visiting surfers in the are to 65.
Kandui Surf Resort / Mentawai islands 26th April ’07 ; Winds were light out of the south this morning and there was not much sign of our new swell so there was not any burning desire to start grabbing the surfboards, but as the morning went on we could see bigger and bigger sets starting to come in. We had one boat take off to take a look at waves that take a south wind and they did not have to go far to find some one. Hideaways had a wave and conditions were good. Sets were a little over head and the bigger ones were coming in more and more. Our second boat took off a little later and they ended up at Hideaways as well. The waves were a little on the inconsistent side and the midday sun was a little intense, so the crew came back for some lunch earlier than usual for this group. The big shrimp we were having may have had something to do with that as well! After lunch we went back to Hideaways hoping for an increase in the swell. Although it looked fun, there were quite a few guys out. There is a few more boats in the area than normal. We are probably paying our statistical dues for having so few boats around the past month or so! Anyway, the wind was starting to go a little west as well, with the probability that it would go more west as the afternoon wore on, so we decided to go back and surf 4 Bobs. There were a few guys on it, but we waited for them to get a little more tired and for the winds to get better, and that’s exactly what happened. The winds got more west and the crowd thinned out and we were on it! Waves were maybe a little overhead on the sets and the conditions were good. Amen was taking pictures and we got a ton of waves. Surfed until dark. Looking for a little increase in the swell tomorrow.
