AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE **** Good afternoon reef riders and thanks for dropping in for some baliwaves. Ok, so I went down for a surf check on the Outer Reefs here in Tuban this morning at 6.00am and seeing as though there was still 1-3ft of swell breaking between Kuta Reef and Airport Lefts I was gung ho on getting down to check the action at Uluwatu . It was one of the Uluwatu locals who actually came and picked me up for the ride down there. I had the Cannon XL2 set up by 8.00am and ready to start rolling. Wave height first up was still only in the 2-3ft range with the occasional bigger set wave but after the tide bottomed out and started to push back in it started to get very tubular and slightly bigger on the Main Peak running all the way down through the Racetrack. These current images are frame grabs from the DV I shot and just a sample of the video clips I’ll be loading up for ya’s later on this evening. Crowd levels were in the medium class with something like 35-40 surfers spread out over 100yrds. There were also another dozen surfers sitting down on Temple ’s . Coming home passing Padang Padang and Impossible’s there were some nice looking lines refracting down the reef at Impossible’s in the 2-3ft+ range with a handful of surfers sprinkled through em. Weather wise it was cloudy and overcast down on the Bukit until around 10.00am before the sun really started to warm things up. It musta been at least 34 degree’s Celsius outta the shade. Right now at 2.45pm the temperature would still be in the 30’s and the sky clear and blue. Hopefully we’ll see a bit more size in wave height gracing Bali ’s reef and beach breaks tomorrow. Changing dollars to Rupiah on the streets of Kuta: 1AU$=Rp7,350 – 1US$=Rp8,450. Just one more thing for the new comers to surfing don’t get all confused with my wave height calling it’s pretty standard eg: a 3ft wave is usually head high. Anyway don’t let it get ya down and all emotional like some dude who called himself “the G-Man” who emailed me yesterday having a whine. This is a free to view website, we’re not trying to sell ya anything ? Just show ya’s all how good it is having a surfing holiday in BALI . Thanks again crew and make sure ya look for the new video clips later this evening or first thing in the morning.
Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa ; Made’s 7.00am sms surf report from Lakey Peak says wave height was still in the 3-4ft range out the front on Lakey Peak . There were 20 surfers in the water hooking into the perfect left and right handers, and another 5 riders across the channel on Lakey Pipe. Surfing conditions were ultra clean and glassy at the time of made’s report but he also mentioned that the ESE Tradewind has been kicking in around 11.00am each morning turning it on/cross-shore for the remainder of the day. The total number of visiting surfers in the Lakey Peak area has jumped back up to 75.
Kandui Surf Resort / Mentawai islands 9th May ’07 ; Winds were light and out of the southeast this morning. We had our new guests arrive and they were frothing for a surf. Our other guests had already been here for 11 days so they were moving at a more relaxed pace. Everybody except Nick who had been here already 3 weeks and was still frothing like a first day’er! We split up our 3 boats, two going to Hideaways and one to Beng Beng. The swell had dropped a little but there were still overhead sets at Hideaways, conditions were good, and only a couple of guys were out. Our Beng Beng boat did not do too bad either. It was pushing head high over there and conditions were good. Nobody else was out. Not a lot of boats around at the moment. Hope it stays that way! The rest of our guys went out at 4 Bobs. It was a little bumpy, but there were some head high sets and no one was out. Great start for the guys on their first day. The winds picked up strong out of the northeast around midday and everyone came back to the resort. Later in the afternoon the winds layed down and we sent a boat to Bankvaults. It was glassy and no one was out for the first part of the session when a boat showed up. Overhead and fun. The rest of the guys stuck it out close to the resort and surfed 4 Bobs and John Candy’s where it was still head high. It got really glassy and they surfed until dark. Hoping there is enough swell to get us through the day tomorrow, then Friday the real fun begins!
