MORNING SURF UP-DATE **** Good morning folks and thanks for dropping in to the baliwaves.com for another look at surf and weather conditions here in Bali</st1:place>. I went down for the surf recon of the Outer Reefs at 6.30am and everything is looking good ! Wave height has jumped back up into the 3-5ft range (up to double head high) between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. The tide was just getting towards the top of a 2.1 mtr High set for 8.00am and the wind was still coming lightly outta the North East at 1knot. Kuta Reef was peeling off at 2-4ft and will only get better as the tide starts to run back out. Especially when the off-shore Tradewind kicks in, anytime from here on in. Middle Reef was pushing the 5ft mark and I did see a couple of double head high sets pour through. Airport Left was breaking nicely in the 3-4ft class but was filling up with some serious traffic as I watched. 3 of our guests headed back around to Airport Rights for another round of perfect right handers, so I’m sure I’ll get to hear how good it was when they get back to Home Base . I’m gunna try and get back out to Kuta Reef later this morning to give all the knockers another look at just how perfect that wave is. But you can rest assured that just about every location here along Bali’s West Coast will be cranking at some stage of the tide. Speaking of Tide’s we’ve got the New Moon coming up on the 16th of May so we’ll be starting to see some big differences in the actual range between High and Low. That’s when the reef breaks offer the best of what they got. Weather wise this morning right now at 7.35am, there is some light cloud looking towards the North but other than that we’re gunna be in for just another hot and sunny day around Bali . Changing holiday dollars to Rupiah on the streets of Kuta you’ll find that; 1AU$=Rp7,325 – 1US$=Rp8,850 . There’s also been a bit of a petrol crisis / shortage around Bali and all of Indonesia for that matter for the last week. But hopefully things will get back to normal some time this week. Don’t forget to take a tour of the 113 video clips on baliwaves.com because I added 3 NEW CLIPS for ya’s yesterday. Plus some new photos for the bodyboarder sector. Ok then it’s a new week and we’ve got a new swell, it just keeps on getting better and better in Bali for the next 4-5 months so make sure you get over here and experience it for yourselves. Is Bali safe you ask ? Hell yes !!!! Catch ya SL8R.
Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa; My man on Sumbawa Dewa Made has sms’d through his report on surfing conditions at the ever popular surfing location of Lakey Peak and says that wave height is down in the 3-4ft range, or, head to head high plus to make it simple. Surfing conditions were clean and glassy with no wind, but Dewa Made says there was just a little bit of bump in the waves as it’s a new swell showing today. There were 14 surfers out the front of the Aman Gati Hotel riding the perfect left and rights on Lakey Peak . Another 10 tube junkies were surfing on Lakey Pipe. And with the *High tide happening through the early am* there was a lot of surfer traffic heading down the beach towards Periscopes. Just a reminder for anyone wanting to try out Lakey Peak make sure you check the tidal information before you head over there. It’s pretty important that you line up your time there while the High Tide is happening through the early am and then progressing forward each day. That way you’ll be assured of scoring perfection. Merpati Airlines are flying there daily from Bali and you can buy your tickets from a 1000 different travel agents anywhere in Bali (and save yourselves some dollars by doing it on your pat malone) Once your in Bima there’s transport drivers waiting to take you to Lakey Peak for around Rp500,000 per van, and that’s split between the surfers. Then ya got a range of Hotels to choose from all right in front of the waves, ranging from low low budget to the very very comfortable rooms of the Aman Gati Hotel. Plus ya can always drop us an email for more information on getting across to lakey’s.
Kandui Surf Resort / Mentawai islands 11th May 07 ; Winds were light this morning out of the southeast. I took the dingy over to Kandui’s early to see if our new swell was showing yet. There were some shoulder high lines rolling through, and it was looking nice and glassy. I spread the word that the swell was starting to hit. Our first boat went to Nipusi looking for some size. It was overhead, but not anything to write home about. Our second and third boats waited for the tide to come up a bit and for the swell to fill in. Ahh, patience is a virtue! We both headed for Hideaways around mid morning. The wind had picked up a little from the southeast (offshore there) and overhead sets were starting to roll in. The guys stayed out all day, refilling the drink and snack supply once while checking Kandui’s to see what was happening over there (not as good as Hideaways), and they got tons of sick barrels. I’m sure they got a lot of good photos and video so you will probably see how good it was in a mag or CD in the future. The swell got bigger the entire day with sets double overhead coming in. It got really glassy in the late afternoon when the best waves came through, but then a little storm came through and blew it out late. Everyone was super stoked. Expecting even bigger surf tomorrow.
Kandui Surf Resort / Mentawai islands 12th May 07; Pretty epic today. Surf was actually looking a bit smaller this morning, but not by much. Super glassy early. I sat in a chair on the beach drinking coffee and staring out at the line up at Rifles hoping to see that roping set peel across the reef. It wasn’t quite big enough today out there so when the southeast winds
started to blow in my face I started thinking about going left. Our first boat went to Hideaways. Conditions were clean and the waves were still well overhead. Our second boat was not far behind and they also couldn’t get any further than Hideaways either, seeing the open blue barrels as they pulled up and only our first boat on it. Our third boat with our pros also stopped at hideaways, although a sick barrel out at Kandui’s with no boats on it as we went by almost changed our coarse. Tide was still a little low. So we all ended up surfing Hideaways and everybody had smiles on their faces after wards. No one’s bigger that Bob’s, our kneeboarder, who got a big set wave and barrel even the pros were talking about! Waves were four feet overhead or so, great conditions, tubes…. Everybody was stoked. A couple of boats showed up after a while and one by one our Kandui boats went back for some lunch. It was a quick lunch though, then one boat took off back to Hideaways, and one went to Rifles. Hideaways was as epic as the morning with no one out, (those boats had already had enough) and Rifles had no one out also, but the swell was not really wrapping in there so they ended up pulling anchor and going to Hideaways as well. Good call because they had a great time. Our pros were thinking about some rest, but our Kandui alarm (Amen, he’s always got an eye on that wave!) went off after a check with the dingy and our guys were on a boat within minutes and were getting shacked before their lunches settled. The waves were inconsistent, but when they came in it was about as good as it gets. Conditions were perfect and the waves were about four feet overhead. There was a lot of photos and video being taken so I have a feeling you will soon be seeing Yadin and Ozzie getting mad barrels in a mag or movie near you! Meanwhile, our one guest that wasn’t in to that sort of waves soloed glassy, empty, overhead 4 Bobs. Tough life! Looking for it to drop a little tomorrow.
