MORNING SURF UP-DATE **** Good morning to all you surfers and welcome back to your baliwaves.com surf and weather resource station. Well as usual I was down sussing out surfing conditions (6.30am) on the Outer Reefs here in Tuban and to me it doesn’t look like there’s been too much change in wave height out there between Kuta Reef and Airport Left . The wind was still calm at that time so when the Tradewind kicks in, in another hour or so, surfing conditions are only gunna get better. Wave height on Kuta Reef was coming through in the 2-3ft+ range and there were a couple of dawn patrollers in the water. Middle Reef was still breaking in the head to double head high range but with the tide running in for a solid 2.3mtr High set for 9.30am will be at it’s best later, on the run out tide. Airport left had head to head high plus waves breaking nicely, and with a still empty line-up, but that’ll change. The crew from Home Base reckon they had a ball around at Airport Right yesterday with plenty of waves for the total of 10 surfers who made the trip to the other side of the runway. With wave height in the head to head high plus class. This morning the boys have opted to see what’s happening up at Keramas , after hearing reports of perfect 6 foot right handers up there yesterday. Poor old Slim will be hitting the road as well, but in the opposite direction towards Uluwatu . Not with his quiver, but with the Cannon XL2 to score ya’s some video action from Ulu’s “ Main Peak ”. Weather wise so far this morning we’ve got some light cloud cover up high, but that’s not gunna stand a chance when the ESE Tradewind kicks in. Temperature wise we’ll be heading for another hot one with the mercury heading for the low 30’s on the Celsius scale. Hey and don’t forget when ya day is done and ya wanna kick back for a few cold one’s make sure ya call into the “The Dewi Sri” live seafood restaurant here in Jalan Kartika Plaza, Tuban (the seafood at Jimburan Bay is not even in the picture). Anyway the boss Mr Nyoman Korna wants all you lot to know that between the hours of 3pm till 7pm, 7 days a week for the next month, he’s going to be offering ya’s ICY COLD BEER at way below Happy Hour prices. A large Bintang Beer will cost Rp12,000 (AU$1.70) and a small bottle of Bintang goes for just Rp7,000 (AU$0.90). So if you’ve got a thirst for ICE COLD BEER make sure ya drop by and say G’Day to Nyoman and his friendly staff at the “Dewi Sri” Ok then crew have a good one today, even if your not yet over here in Bali. Stay tuned to the baliwaves, because I’ll have some fresh VIDEO to show ya’s later this evening.
Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa; Just like clock work Dewa Made sms’d through his observations of surfing conditions from Lakey’s and says that wave height is still hanging in there at head to head high plus on Lakey Peak for the crew of 10 surfers sharing the perfect left and right peak this morning. While across the channel on Lakey Pipe there were another 6 riders honing their tube riding skills. Dewa Made reckons surfing conditions were clean and glassy but a bit bumpy out there from the solid high tide. The total number of visiting surfers in the area is still averaging around 70, that’s around 10 guests per hotel / losman. Just a reminder for anyone want ing to try out Lakey Peak make sure you check the tidal information before you head over there. It’s pretty important that you line up your time there while the High Tide is happening through the early am and then progressing forward each day. That way you’ll be assured of scoring perfection. Merpati Airlines are flying there daily from Bali and you can buy your tickets from a 1000 different travel agents anywhere in Bali (and save yourselves some dollars by doing it on your pat malone) Once your in Bima there’s transport drivers waiting to take you to Lakey Peak for around Rp500,000 per van, and that’s split between the surfers. Then ya got a range of Hotels to choose from all right in front of the waves, ranging from low low budget to the very very comfortable rooms of the Aman Gati Hotel. Plus ya can always drop us an email for more information on getting across to lakey’s.
Kandui Surf Resort / Mentawai islands 13th May 07; So glassy this morning. It’s great to just sit on the restaurant deck and sip coffee while watching the sun come up over an oily ocean. Swell was looking smaller so not many of the crew were in too much of a hurry after the great day we had yesterday. First boat probably took off around 7:30 or so and they went to Pit Stop’s, avoiding the high risk, low tide session at Hideaways. Waves were around shoulder high plus over there and they were stoked to have a fun day and let the Adrenalin glands recharge. The second boat when to Hideaways. Waves were still overhead there and conditions were clean. Good, uncrowded session for them. Our pros were looking for a rippable wave today so they went to Pit Stop’s late morning where it was a little better than early morning with the fuller tide. I saw some video. Nice! Airs, turns, little barrels… After lunch some of the crew went back to Hideaways. Waves were getting slightly smaller, but still overhead and good. I took off on another boat and with a couple of guests and we looked a Hideaways also, but there was actually a boat load of kayakers there by then, some world champion wave ski somethingorathers. We were amused to see a bunch of guys with paddles out in the lineup so we waited around to see the carnage, but I have to admit that they were handling much better than I would have imagined. When they didn’t make it though, it was a little scary seeing them rolling in the whitewash with those big things while guys were trying to paddle out, so we gave that a miss and went to Nipusi. A handful of guys were out there, but conditions were clean so our guests went out to get a few in the overhead surf. I opted to solo some empty Bankvaults (twist my arm!) where sets were 2 to 4 feet overhead. It was glassy, and a bit lumpy and shifty, but some good waves were there if you could find them. Got a couple and watched the sunset from the water. Cracked a Bintang on the way back and called it a good day. Hoping the swell hangs in there for tomorrow.
