Kandui Surf Resort / Mentawai islands 25th May 07 ; Hey! Sorry for the lapse in the reports. Lighting hit our tower and the Internet was available only on the hill if you had a laptop, which I don’t have right now. There has been some pretty epic surf. There were 4 or 5 storms that marched back to back across the Indian ocean, ending with the grand finale, probably the biggest swell I’ve ever seen here. I don’t remember exactly day by day where we were surfing, but certain sessions stick in my mind. There were a few days at Hideaways that were well overhead with good conditions. The pros we had here were killing it and Dustin Humphrey has the photographic evidence to prove it! There was a session at Bankvaults where the swell pulsed as we were out there and some of the waves were hitting triple overhead. We didn’t think it was that big so we had only our medium sized boards. We had to let some of the bigger ones go because they were sucking too hard to paddle in, but once in a while one would let us in even on our shorter boards and it was a lot of fun when they did. The last swell was a bruiser! It had a lot of west in it so it amazingly wasn’t showing that big in front or the resort, but on the more west facing reefs it was out of control! I can’t imagine how big places like Bankvaults were. It was too scary to go look because waves were breaking all over the place on outer reefs and it was spooky motoring around not knowing if you were going to discover a new surf spot the hard way! Kandui was huge and holding it, but the winds were not right so no one surfed it. One of the pros was thanking god that the winds were wrong because they would have had to charge it! How big was it? Well, the next day the swell had dropped a lot and we still have pictures of Kandui triple overhead plus! It was big. The winds were OK for Rifles that big day and we got some overhead surf there, and at 4 Bobs and John Candy’s, but nothing like what was going on over on the other side of the island. Kandui’s was good the next few days as the swell was dropping and our pros were all over it. Epic pictures. You will be seeing them soon in a mag I’m sure Many thanks to Dustin Humphrey, Ozzie Wright, Yadin Nicol (who scored Kandui last year too), Jay Quinn, Hank Gaskell, Ryan Turner, and, last but not least, Dane Gadauskas who was owning Kandui on the biggest day, for hanging out with us. Looking at the ocean the last couple of days it’s hard to believe it is the same sea that was flooding homes all over Indonesia just a few days ago with huge surf. It’s been pretty small. We have been surfing Burgerworld and 4 Bobs. Burgerworld has still been overhead, but less than epic with the onshore, southeast winds we have been having. We are hoping for a little bump in the swell tomorrow. Long range charts show a good one coming in a week or so. We have our fingers crossed!
