AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE **** Howdy crew and it is time for the run down on whats been happening here along Bali ’s wave riddled West Coast today . I started off my rounds this morning at 6.45am checking out surfing conditions on the Outer Reefs here in Tuban . Wave height was still holding at similar size to yesterday, maybe a touch smaller. I tell ya’s there were some nice one’s coming through when I was out there, I even managed to clock up 20 waves in 1.5hrs. This morning Kuta Reef was breaking in the waist to head high range and there were a few early risers in the line-up. Middle Reef was still holding at head to a few feet over head on the bigger sets, and there were already half a dozen surfers getting into it. Airport Left was the most consistent with the more Southerly swell direction , breaking in the head to head high plus class. The tide was just hitting the top of a 1.9mtr High at 7.00am while the wind was coming lightly outta the SSE @ 1-2knot . I was straight on the phone trying to organize a ride down to Uluwatu and scored on my second try with Devis Ratif , who by the way rides for Quicksilver Indonesia . We made it down to Ulu around 9.30am to find wave height pouring through in the 3-5ft+ range on the Main Peak . Surfing conditions were clean and smooth even though the wind was hitting it at a slight off/cross-shore angle. There were also some long rides going down right down under the Temple and a few surfers surfing hard down there. As the tide started to get lower there was some good surfing going on from the visiting entourage of sponsored surfers, from the Main Peak and through the Racetrack sections. I’d have to say there was probably the biggest turn out of surfers down at Ulu today with around 60 surfers spread out from the Main Peak down through to the Racetrack. A distance of around 150mtrs. Coming home past Padang Padang and the top end of Impossible’s there wasn’t anything happening at PP but there were a few 2-3 foot lines bending down the reef at Impossible’s. Weather wise today there was plenty of cloud cover down at Uluwatu making it a real bitch shooting with my 1000mm lens, and there was even a couple of brief rain showers included. Even so the temperature woulda still made the 30 degree Celsius range outta the shade of the cliff side cafe’s. Ok New Stuff department ; Yesterday we made up a new page for the Mentawai Surf Reports and you’ll find that in the surf report menue. We’ve also been told to expect a steady flow of photos coming with the reports so make sure ya check it out. Yesterday I also loaded up 2 new Video Clips of from the big day out at Padang Padang, but featuring some maniac body boarder’s. Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa; Our man Dewa Made has done sent in his sms surf report from the ever famous surfing location of Lakey Peak and says that wave height was still breaking in the head to head high plus range out the front on Lakey Peak Surfing conditions were a touch bumpy and the wind was slight on-shore coming outta the SSE @ 1-2knot. for the 10 surfers that were settling for the perfect left and rights on Lakey Peak . There were no surfers riding the tubes of Lakey Pipe . Quite a few surfers were making the trek down to Periscopes and there were also a few surfers sneaking off up to Cobble Stones to get the most of the tide. The total number of visiting surfers in the Lakey Peak region has dropped down to 50.
For anyone want ing to try out Lakey Peak make sure you check the tidal information before you head over there. It’s pretty important that you line up your time there while the High Tide is happening through the early am and then progressing forward each day. That way you’ll be assured of scoring perfection. Merpati Airlines are flying there daily from Bali and you can buy your tickets from a 1000 different travel agents anywhere in Bali (and save yourselves some dollars by doing it on your pat malone) Once your in Bima there’s transport drivers waiting to take you to Lakey Peak for around Rp500,000 per van, and that’s split between the surfers. Then ya got a range of Hotels to choose from all right in front of the waves, ranging from low low budget to the very very comfortable rooms of the Aman Gati Hotel.
