Kandui Surf Resort in the Mentawai island chain; June 15th surf report
Waves were looking a little smaller today. The winds were light out of the east. Kandui’s still had some swell showing and the conditions were pretty good so the crew decided to go out there. There was no one else out. It was a little overhead on the sets and there were some nice shoulders with the high tide and some tubes as the tide dropped. When the tide got too low, it was time to get some lunch and wait out the midday sun. The ocean was so beautiful with the sun out and the water has such a nice color, kind of a turquoise blue, but we absorbed enough sun yesterday so it was good to just cruise and enjoy the scenery. Mid afternoon the winds turned north so we went to give Bankvaults a look. There was no one out there and the conditions were good. We were on it right away! The waves were hitting 3 or 4 feet overhead on the sets and, although it was a little inconsistent, there were some good waves coming through and a few nice barrels. The winds went a little west late in the afternoon so we got out and watched a nice sunset as we were on our way back to the resort. Looking for smaller surf tomorrow.
Kandui Surf Resort in the Mentawai island chain; June 14th surf report
The winds were coming out of the east this morning and was blowing pretty hard. We headed straight to Hideaways, but the outgoing tide or something was making it look a bit funky and the swell didn’t seem to be getting in there like it was yesterday afternoon, so we moved on. When we got to E-Bay there were only a handful of guys out, the conditions were good, and there were some overhead sets rolling through. We surfed for a couple of hours, at least, and everyone got fun waves. By that time the tide was getting pretty low and the crowd was getting thicker, so we went to take a look at Beng Beng. There were only 3 guys out, the conditions were good, and it was even bigger there. It was actually a little too big for that spot, but we still got good waves, and the 3 other surfers got out of the water right away so we were surfing by ourselves. Not bad. In the afternoon, our boat went to Hideaways. No one was out and the winds backed off soon after they got there. The waves were well overhead again, the conditions were good, and there was only 1 guy out this time. I saw some pictures and I’m really sorry I missed that boat! Looks like they had a really good session. Looking for the swell to wind down a bit tomorrow.
