AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE **** Hello crew and thanks for waiting around for the final word on what’s been happening surf and weather wise around your favorite little tropical island called Bali. Ok it all started off at 6.30am this morning when I went down for my first surf recon of the Outer Reefs here in Tuban. Wind direction was coming clean off-shore outta the ESE @ 4-7knot and the tide was getting towards the bottom of the Low water line. Straight away I could see that wave height had had another slight boost through the night, so I was already anticipating heading down to Uluwatu . Kuta Reef was breaking in the 1-2ft range but no surfers taking on the shallow reef. But Middle Reef had a couple of early bird surfers in the water and it was looking pretty good (after 4 days of micro surf), breaking in the shoulder to head high plus range. And Airport Left was also still a bit too shallow for the Japanese crew but around mid morning there woulda been quite a few surfers out there for sure. I hung around until Dewa Made showed up and by 8.30am we were sitting in the comfort of my favorite warung overlooking the Racetrack at Uluwatu . Wave height down at Uluwatu was pulling a solid 4ft+ on the set waves and with the tide right on the bottom of the Low the Racetrack was smoking through tube ride after tube ride for the boys and girls in the line up. Local surfers Wayan Gobleg and Made Lana were surfing as smooth as ever, both in and out of the tube. They weren’t alone though, I counted nearly 100 surfers spread out from way up underneath the Temple at Ulu all the the way down through the Racetrack . But that’s a good 1-1.5km stretch of reef. Weather wise it was a bit dodgy riding the bikes down there while the sky was still all cloudy and grey from the nights rain. But by the time we were in position and shooting the sky cleared up an gave us blue sky and sunshine for the next 3 hrs. Coming home past Padang Padang and Impossible’s there were at least 50 surfers spread along the reef at Impossible’s and there was a good 3ft of swell wrapping down the line to Bingin . Nothing breaking at Padang Padang. Too me it appears that at least 75% of the visiting surfers to Bali are hanging out down on the Bukit end of the island this season. I’m thinking tomorrow we might have a return to slightly smaller waves around Bali before we see another fresh swell turning up around Sunday come Monday. Ok then that’s about it for today, I also managed to load ya’s up another 75 odd photos into the latest Surfing Gallery so check them out before ya tune out. Ya never know who ya might find in there. We want you guys to come over and have a ball and then go back home and tell your friends how good it is.
Lakey Peak on the island of Sumbawa; Onky sms’d through that wave height over at lakey’s has also improved and this morning saw solid 4ft sets hitiing Lakey Peak . Surfing conditions were perfectly clean and glassy for the 10 surfers in he water at 7.00am. Also for the other 8 surfers sitting across the channel on Lakey Pipe . No one surfing at Nunga’s or making the trek down to Periscopes and the low tide factor woulda been playing a part in that. Onky has kept it short and to the point today as he was stinging to get out in the water for a few waves himself. But he’ll have more info from lakey’s for us again tomorrow. For anyone want ing to try out Lakey Peak make sure you check the tidal information before you head over there. It’s pretty important that you line up your time there while the High Tide is happening through the early am and then progressing forward each day. That way you’ll be assured of scoring perfection. Merpati Airlines are flying there daily from Bali and you can buy your tickets from a 1000 different travel agents anywhere in Bali (and save yourselves some dollars by doing it on your pat malone) Once your in Bima there’s transport drivers waiting to take you to Lakey Peak for around Rp500,000 per van, and that’s split between the surfers. Then ya got a range of Hotels to choose from all right in front of the waves, ranging from low low budget to the very very comfortable rooms of the Aman Gati Hotel. Plus ya can always drop us an email for more information on getting across to lakey’s
