Kandui Surf Resort in the Mentawai island chain; June 23rd surf report .
Today wasn’t a good day for surfing. It was semi-glassy early, but you could see the storm coming before there was any daylightl. Lighting flashes and bolts followed by rumbling thunder that were steadily getting closer. We were probably still on our first cup of coffee when the wind came, strong out of the east, and it blew like that just about the entire day. It only rained a little bit though, and after that some of the guests went diving and spear fishing while the others were content to just hang out. After lunch many of the guests and our local crew played volleyball together. Not as good as a Rifles barrel, but a lot of fun. After the game the winds seemed to back down a little so everyone pilled into 2 boats to go and surf Nipusi. They may have had more fun playing another volleyball game, but it was just team Kandui out and the waves were head high and they weren’t in a wetsuit so it was all good! I have to go to HT’s tomorrow and I will probably be back sometime Monday. The forecast is looking pretty epic starting about then.
Kandui Surf Resort in the Mentawai island chain; June 22nd surf report. Our swell dropped overnight and it was looking pretty small out front. Winds were out of the southeast. Our first boat went to Hideaways. Waves were pretty small over there, probably chest high max, but the conditions were good and no one was out so we gave it a go for a while. It wasn’t too long before we were over it though, so we left to look for something a little better. Nipusi looked fun, even with the onshore southeast winds, but there were a few guys on it so we opted for empty Bankvaults instead. The sets there were a little inconsistent, but when they came they were one or two feet overhead and there were some fun shoulders if you could find them. We stayed out surfing by ourselves until the midday sun drove us out. Our second boat left after lunch and they got some good Nipusi. It was a little smaller than yesterday, but it was standing up a little more and there was no one out. The southeast winds backed down pretty nicely also so conditions were not bad. Fun session. In the late afternoon, some of our crew surfed 4 Bobs. It was chest high or so on the sets and pretty fun. No one else around. Hoping for a little more swell to show tomorrow.
