Kandui Surf Resort in the Mentawai island chain; June 7th surf report .
The ocean was super glassy this morning. And there were just enough clouds in the sky to make for a pretty awesome sunrise. The only thing missing was a pumping swell! It was looking really small out front. Forecasts were calling for a rising swell today coming out of the southwest, so we thought there could be something on the west facing reefs. Sure enough, our guys scored empty E-Bay with good conditions. Waves were about head high and they surfed until they were beat. A boat finally turned up then and that’s all the excuse they needed to head home for a late lunch. There was some talk of going to Beng Beng in the afternoon on the low tide, but everyone decided to save their energy for tomorrow. Expecting our swell to hang in there for another day.

Wow, the swell really dropped overnight. It was about half the size it was yesterday and seemed to get smaller throughout the day. The winds started out southeast early this morning, then quickly clocked around to northeast. Our Hideaways plans changed just as quickly and we decided to give Bankvaults a look. It was a little funky. There seemed to be a lot of extra bump in the water besides the ground swell. The crew went ahead and surfed Nipusi and had fun with some sets still going a couple of feet overhead and with the offshore winds blowing. I didn’t want to take any of their waves so I soloed weird Bankvaults, which was also a couple of feet overhead plus on the best sets. There were a couple of stray good waves out there so I was glad I did. The wind calmed down and turned west in the afternoon. Me and a couple of others went for a late afternoon session at 4 Bobs. Conditions were about as good as they get, but the waves were nearly non-existent as our last swell was fading fast. We spent way more time looking at the fish and coral and sunset than looking for sets, but it was a good setting to just hang and talk. Hoping our next swell will give us something to surf tomorrow.
