Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands September 28th surf report . It was pretty windy out of the south-southeast this morning and it only got stronger through the day. I took a look at Kandui’s at first light just in case, but it was a no go. There was enough swell but the wind was messing things up. We decided to hang out for a while, then catch Beng Beng on the low tide at midday. When we showed up there late morning there were 3 guys out, but they had been surfing all morning and ready for lunch so we had the place to ourselves all through the low tide. Conditions were good and the waves were a little overhead and consistent. Everyone surfed until they pretty much couldn’t catch another wave. We couldn’t have done any better for ourselves this day around here so we were pretty satisfied with our session. One brave soul surfed 4 Bobs in the late afternoon. Maybe head high, but pretty windy. Expecting smaller surf tomorrow.
Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands September 27th surf report . We woke up early this morning hoping to score some Rifles. The swell was cooperating. I ran out to look at it with the dingy and saw double overhead lines grinding down the reef, but unfortunately the wind was coming up out of the southeast and it was already too bumpy to ride, so we headed off to E-Bay. It wasn’t a bad back up plan as it was overhead there with perfect conditions and nobody was out! We surfed it for hours until our hunger got the better of us so we headed back. Our second boat left a little later and went to Beng Beng to catch the low tide. It also had great conditions and was overhead, but they had to share it with a whopping 3 people. In the afternoon the winds came up even harder and more south in direction. We checked Kandui’s, but it was wishful thinking. The winds were just not right. Too bad cuz the swell was getting in there much better than the morning and it would have been epic. So it was a 4 Bobs afternoon for some and a happy hour afternoon at “ Barstools” for others. Looking at fading swell tomorrow.
Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands September 26 surf report. The swell was looking a little smaller this morning and the winds were on the light side blowing out of the south. The guys were not looking too motivated but we got a boat out by around 8 to go check Hideaways. But there would be no repeat of yesterday’s barrels out there. The winds died and then started picking up out of the north. It wasn’t too long before they were howling out of the north and so both our boats headed for Nipusi. It was clean there and the waves were several feet overhead and nobody was out. The guys had a good time. In the afternoon, we sent one of the boats with the guests that were leaving today out to Nipusi again to get a last surf. It was clean and fun with the winds blowing light now out of the northwest, but they returned with enough time to get in a little Rifles session in the last hour of daylight. They were stoked to get it just before they had to leave. Rifles got clean the last couple hours of the day and our new swell was starting to show. We’re hoping for good things in the morning!
