Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands Nov 3rd surf report . The ocean was smooth this morning. The swell was looking pretty small though so the boys were in no big hurry and hung around to see which way the wind would come up. Just after breakfast the wind came up out of the northeast at about 5 mph so our boat headed over to Nipusi to see what was going on. It was clean there, but not very big and there was a boat on it, so our crew took a chance and went to Burgerworld even though the wind was not coming out of a good direction for that spot. When they arrived it was looking a little bumpy, but there was no one out so they went for a surf. As luck would have it, about a half hour into their session the winds began to slow down until it stopped and then turned offshore out of the west. All of a sudden the surf was clean and they were getting overhead waves and long rides all to themselves the rest of the day. It was the last day for a lot of our guests so they took full advantage of their luck and surfed for 6 hours or more! They got back late in the afternoon and had just enough time to pack, eat and jump on the boat. By the way, Brad, one of the last guests, choose to rent surfboards from our selection of Surftech’s and not only did he not have to lug around a board bag through the airport, he read the website and brought only what our man Anthony recommended and the result was that he didn’t have ANY check in baggage. He just had 2 carry on’s. Something to think about! We only have 2 guests at the resort right now. Unfortunately, the swell is looking pretty small for a couple of days, but I’m sure we will find some surf.
Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands Nov 2nd surf report . Our swell was still hanging in there this morning. The winds were light and variable. After some breakfast, the wind became steady, yet light, out of the north so the boys headed for Bankvaults and Nipusi. Conditions there were clean with the light offshore winds and the waves were still a couple of feet overhead with only a couple of random guys at Nipusi and no one out at Bankvaults. Our guys got good waves at both spots, getting shacked at Bankvaults and hitting the lip at Nipusi. They stayed out a long time, only coming back when a little squall came up out of the west around mid afternoon. After the storm pasted and we got some lunch in our bellies, then some of the guys headed back as the winds had gone light north again. There were still waves, but some west bump was still lingering from the storm so it was a pretty average surf. But, like one of the guests said, it was still better than most surfs back home and there was no one out and the water was warm! Hoping a little forecasted southwest swell will show tomorrow.
Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands Nov 1st surf report Our swell was a little smaller today, but there was still fun surf. The winds were blowing lightly out of the southeast this morning so our crew headed off to Beng Beng. Conditions there were good, but the waves were pretty small because of the extreme south angle of the swell, only about chest high. After a couple of hours of that the guys moved over to Bankvaults. The winds had slowed down and it was getting glassy and the waves were 2 or 3 feet overhead. Most the guys went out at Bankvaults and the rest surfed Nipusi. Two new guests arrived about noon and had a quick lunch, then we headed out for a surf as well. We pulled up at Bankvaults just in time to see one of our other guests pull into a nice barrel under sunny skies and come out dry! The wind just about then turned offshore, coming out of the north as well. They thought they had landed in paradise! We jumped out and got some waves. There were some good ones, but shoulders were hard to come by, so we moved over to Nipusi where conditions were perfect and nobody was out. We had great session, surfing until dark. Hoping a new swell will start showing tomorrow.
Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands Oct 31 surf report . Our new south swell was showing out at 4 Bobs this morning. It wasn’t pumping, but there were a few overhead sets. The winds were out of the southeast, which isn’t a good wind when you have a straight south swell, so we hung out and hoped for a wind switch. Just as we were going to give up and go to Beng Beng in hopes that some of that straight south was getting in there, the winds suddenly switched and went west so we jumped in the boat and had a look at Rifles. It was marginably good, but a bit on the small size. A boat got on it quickly and that was enough for us to pick up and move to 4 Bobs where no one was out and the waves were occasionally overhead with perfect conditions. Everyone had fun and there were even a couple of barrels. The winds backed off in the early afternoon so the boys went for a surf at Nipusi. Waves there were pushing double overhead on the sets and no one was out there either! Conditions were pretty good there and the boys got there fill, and there were even a couple of good barrels there as well. The tide was coming up fast in the afternoon so we ran over to Rifles to see what was happening. Again, no one was out and, although it wasn’t epic Rifles, it was pretty fun and there were a couple of nice barrels to be found there as well. All in all a good day! Hoping our swell will hang in there for another day.
Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands Oct 30 surf report . It was looking pretty small again this morning. Our predicted south swell was not showing yet, so it was back to Burgerworld. It wasn’t quite as good as yesterday, but still plenty of fun. The guys surfed for a long time. Good for some because most were completely worn out for the rest of the day and the new swell started showing late in the afternoon so there was only 3 people max out at chest high plus, glassy 4 Bobs for the late session. Just before dark a couple of head high sets rolled through so hopes are high for tomorrow. Everyone is hoping for Rifles! The swell is not predicted to be very big, but there is a chance. I’ll let you know tomorrow!
Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands Oct 29 surf report . The surf was looking pretty small this morning, but at least the winds were light. Yesterday the wind was pretty strong out of the west so we were limited to small 4 Bobs after being turned back by a storm trying to go to Burgerworld. But today the skies were clear and we made Burgerworld our first stop. It was a good size for Burgerworld, about head high on the sets and it was pretty glassy for most the session. We brought a lot of snacks and some sandwiches because we knew Burgerworld would be the only thing working and didn’t want to make the long trip twice, so we hung out for hours surfing, cruising on the island, or napping on the boat. The wind got a little stronger about mid afternoon so we called it a day. Hoping for a new swell to start filling in tomorrow
