Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai islands, Nov 22 surf report
Our last guests of the 07 season left this morning. The forecasts were for the swell to be even a little bigger today so some of them were thinking of extending, but they couldn’t quite pull it off. The waves were indeed looking a little bigger out in front as they were motoring out past 4 Bobs on their way to the Mentawaiian airport, and so glassy too. It must have hurt a little! After they left, we were busy taking care of staff and stuff, with many of our guys going straight home after being here for a long, almost 9 month season. We were seeing sets pumping into the reefs here and were picturing what Bankvaults must be looking like if we could only get over there. Finally, our chores were done and we jumped into a boat and headed for Bankvaults. When we got there, we couldn’t believe our eyes. Double overhead plus, glassy, empty barrels! And it had been looking like that all day with no one around to even see it. We were quickly out there, just three of the handful of owners here at Kandui. It was me, Jordan, and Amen. Our buddy, Huntster, choose to hang out and take pictures of us. He could see it was a special moment for us after a long season of making sure our guests were taken care of. It was our turn! Pictures say more than words so I will let them do the talking for me. Needless to say, it was a hell of a lot better than where you were surfing, and there wasn’t another surfer within who knows how far! It was a great way to end our 2007 season.
Thanks to all of our guests. Either the island turns everybody into great people to be around, or we just seem to attract folks like that. Nevertheless, it was a pleasure having all of you here. I hope to see you again soon.
We are heading into the “off” season now. You can see the kind of waves you can score here with no one around during this time. Although it might not be as big as the “on” season if you average it out, there is just about always a shoulder to head high wave around and conditions are generally good with it being summer on this side of the world, and there are just about never any surfers around. And if you are lucky and get an “off” season swell, then you are laughing! And you would probably be surprised at how often they come. Keep an eye on the Indian Ocean storms and when you see them, mind surf the empty waves you would be scoring if you were here! We are open all year round as long as enough people book to make it worth our wild. Think about it!
