****MORNING SURF UP-DATE**** Hello crew, and yes, I’m back from my little 3 day jaunt to Scar Reef on the island of Sumbawa . And I’m telling ya’s it was pumping at Scar’s yesterday but I’ll load those photos up for ya’s to stare at tomorrow morning ok. I also shot some video footage while I was there and that will be edited and ready to watch over the weekend as well. In fact I’ll see if I can get Troy to make up another special page for Scar Reef and I’ll give ya’s the full run down on Scar Reef / Sumbawa.
For now I’m gunna fill ya’s in on what’s happening surf wise here in Bali this morning. By the way these current photos are from Scotto who kept shooting for us while I was away, plus all his info for the last couple of days, Uluwatu and Bingin.
Ok my 7.00am surf recon of the Outer Reefs here in Tuban was showing wave height to be in the 2-4ft range between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. The first of our tides today is going to be a 0.9mtr Low between 11.00am – 12.00pm then we’ll have a 1.6mtr High around 5.30pm. Wind direction was coming clean off-shore outta the ESE @ 3-6knot. But will probably increase in strength by midday and swing a bit more to the ESE-SE.
Kuta Reef already had around 15-20 surfers in the line-up and there looked like there was some nice little waves peeling along the reef in the waist to shoulder high plus class.
Middle Reef was breaking in the shoulder to head high plus range and there also a few surfers in the water out there. Middle’s will improve as the tide drops for the 0.9mtr Low through midday.
Airport Left looked pretty popular with half a dozen reef taxi’s parked across in the channel. Wave height at Airports was also in the waist to shoulder high plus range.
Weather wise outside it’s another perfect holiday type day for the lucky punters here on vacation. Blue sky, off-shore wind, warm water and plenty of options for a wave out there.
Alrighty then and here’s what Scotto had to say on the last couple of days of action around Bali .
Bali 11th June 08 Today I was down checking the outer reefs at 630am to see if there was a sign that the kick in swell had arrived. It was definelty a little bigger but not yet what I was hoping for. It was enough however for me to get on the bike and take a trip down to Uluwatu as the wind was light and coming out of the south.
I arrived on scene around 8am to find that condition were glass and there was the odd three foot wave running nicely down the racetrack. As the tide changed and the wind came up a little, the waves were holding open. There was some great barrells being had by the few sitting on this section of the reef and pulling in.
I only hung around for a couple of hours but it was enough to shoot off a few photos and show guys how it was this morning. Pretty good as you can see, and I hope that there will be some more to come tomorrow. There was a bit of cloud cover at Uluwatu and when I got home and was going over these photos we even had a spot of rain. Its still a little gray out there as I type but that just cooling things down which is ok by me. OK till next time. Scotto!
Bali 12th June 08 (Uluwatu) This morning I was up with expectation of another increase in swell. I headed straight down to Uluwatu without even doing a surf check. I was on location at 7:30am. The waves were clean and pushing 4ft+ on the sets in my opinion. The waves were a little unsure as they hit the reef but then the tide was running out, so things were not lining up as nicely as if the tide would have been pushing in. All the same some of the boys were getting some pretty nice little barrells.
I hung around for a couple of hours and waited till the tide had just about hit the bottom. Having taken a few photos I decided to call it quits. Uluwatu was only going to get better with the change in the tide but I was done.
OK hope you enjoy these latest photos out of beautiful Bali . Till next time. Scotto!
Bali 12th June 08 (Bingin) I had just spent a couple of hours at Uluwatu and was just at the top of the cliff when a mate I had sent a text too turned up. After a short discussion we decided to head to Bingin and see what the action was like down there. On arrival we watched a 2-3ft set unload on the reef and although the tide was still running out we could see there was potential. We headed down the bottom and lodged ourselfs in one of the many warungs. While my mate headed out to surf I walked down the beach and set up on a rock to take shots of the action.
There were around 25 surfers in the water and as the tide dropped out the wave started to open up. Even the small ones were barrelling, and it is amazing how deep one can get and still come out at Bingin. This wave is just a machine and churns out barrell after barrell for its riders. One reason for this though is the shallow reef, knee deep at best and sharp. I witnessed one broken board and a couple of drops of claret during my short stint here this morning.
ok well its just another day in paradise here in Bali and although there is some grey cloud cover things are still very pleasant. I have been inside long enough now having gone though the chore of sorting out these little beauties for you. I going outside to enjoy whats left of this day. OK till next time. Scotto!
Swell Forecast (9th June – 15th June) . Ok then here’s how I see the next weeks swell situation around Bali . Today as we already know small waves in the 1-2ft+ range and that’s how it’s going to be again tomorrow. Then sometime through Wednesday we will have a brand new swell hitting our reefs and building into some solid waves come Thursday. Cranking from lakey Peak in Sumbawa to G-Land on East Java and Bali in between. This swell should hold into Friday tapering off through Saturday and then hopefully on Sunday we will get another pulse of green through till Monday. So hold onto your hats it’s gunna be on for young and old very soon.
And I’m gunna have a real treat for ya’s later next week as starting Tuesday morning I’ll be setting off on a 9mtr ocean cruising speed boat for 2 nights and 3 days. Cover surfing locations of Desert Point on Lombok all the way through to Scar Reef, Supersucks and Yo-yo’s on the island of Sumbawa . So when I get back to Home base on Thursday I’ll start loading photos and video snipits of what we got up to. I’m thinking this type of trip is gunna be the New Way to hit Lombok and Sumbawa instead of the old 7 day slow boat system. Especially when it’s priced around the same range but doubling the amount of surf time !
And just a reminder that we still have some baliwaves.com T-Shirts and stickers available for ya’s here in Bali so drop me a line.
Mentawai islands ; The good guys from the Kandui Surf Resort have sent us through another new batch of photos showing off more perfection in their part of Ind o. And you’ll be able to suss them out in the Surf Report section. Here’s another baliwaves bonus for ya’s dept; Anyday now we’ll also be providing ya’s with surf reports and photos from the Macaronis Surf Resort up in the Mentawai’s. I was talking to a couple of friends yesterday who have been out on charter in the Ments and they reckon if they ever make it back up there again they won’t be going on a boat after stopping off in the Surf Resorts. That’s where they’ll be heading. The Surf Resorts up there just make it all too easy for their guests with speed boats to zap you around all day and then back to the Resort for R & R in the evenings.
G-Land ; I had a pnone call from G-Land this morning and Raymond said to tell you guys and girls that he’ll give you 15% discount off the published price. Just click on his G-Land banner over in our banner advertisement section and drop him an email.
