****MORNING SURF UP-DATE*** Good morning my fine surfing friends of Bali and welcome back to your baliwaves.com surf and weather report. And sorry I didn’t get a chance to fill ya’s in yesterday as the boys from Home Base and I were on the road (4.30am) in transit to some perfect A frame left and right handers. Yes sir while surfing conditions down this end of the island were small and weak we were up the coast surfing waves pushing up to double head high at times.
And before I give ya’s the goss on todays surfing conditions I better fill ya’s in a bit on the situation we have down at Padang Padang. Well as far as I know at around 7.00pm on the evening of the 11th of July the fishing boat pictured on the cover of baliwaves.com ran a ground just about smack dead in the middle of the take off zone of Padang Padang reef (give or take 5yrds). Now the funny thing is that looking at the angle she hit the reef on I’d have to imagine that she was under power at the time, bow first into the reef. If she had lost power and adrift the strong off-shore wind would have blown her out to sea.
This boat also had a valuable cargo hold full of yellow fin Tuna all in the 50-70kg range that were also abandoned. Needless to say the Padang Padang / Uluwatu folk were all BBQ’ing fish the next night. As of yesterday afternoon the boat is still there in the same position on the reef. And with the tide’s that we have at the moment not being high enough for a tug to extract her until after the Full Moon rises on the 17th.
As of yesterday afternoon the boat started to leak diesel fuel and oil so her hull has been broken by the hard lava flow type reef of Padang Padang. This is going to cause some big problems with the fuel and oil already contaminating the Padang Padang area. The slick was also expanding and heading towards Uluwatu driven by the wind. I just hope it hasn’t gone that far as no one would really know just how much fuel and oil was on board the stricken ship. And if they are able to pull her off the reef there’s every chance that she will just sink as soon as it hits deeper water. So that’s about how much I know at this point in time but if I do get any new info on this crisis I’ll keep you all posted.
Todays 6.45am surf check of the Outer Reefs here in Tuban revealed an almost flat ocean with only just the odd 1 footer breaking between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. The tide was on top of a 2.1mtr High at the time and will be running back out for a 0.7mtr Low around 2.00pm. The ESE-SE off-shore Tradewind was already cranked up blowing at up to 15knots and will more than likely increase in the 20knot range by midday.
Nothing really worth surfing on the Outer Reefs today but all the same there were around a dozen surfers scattered along the reef. The beach breaks up along the Kuta Half Way stretch and up to Padma St would have had a few knee to waist high waves through the early morning. Down at Uluwatu you could probably also find a few waist to checst high plus waves. I’ll load a few new photos that Scotto took down at Uluwatu yesterday for ya’s shortly ok. I think come tomorrow and the crew and I from Home Base will be head back up the coast for some more A frame’s.
Weather wise out tnere this morning it’s cloudy and overcast, no rain as yet but it looks like the cloud will be with us until later this afternoon.
Swell Forecast (10th July – 16th July) Small waves for today the 10th at most locations around Bali with maybe some more size down on the southern end of the island. Hopefully tomorrow (11th) we should receive a small spike in wave height that will last into the weekend. Then we’ll see wave height tapering back off through the middle of next week. Further out we may have a new system moving our way but we’ll have to keep our eye on the charts.
I’d just like to let everyone know about the “Coca-Cola for Bali coastal clean up day†being held at Legian beach 13th July 08 at 8.00am. For more information on this gath ering go to this link for the full run down. https://www.baliwaves.com/Content.aspx?Page=Stories&Section=Read&ID=43
Drop me a line if your interested in organizing your friends to get on board a 10mtr high powered ocean speed boat if you want to surf locations like Desert Pt, Scar Reef, Supersuck, Yo-Yo’s without having to wait days to get the their the old way. I’m thinking this type of trip is gunna be the New Way to hit Lombok and Sumbawa instead of the old 7 day slow boat system. Especially when it’s priced around the same range but doubling the amount of surf time ! These charters are only for private groups at this stage so organize your surfing buddies and get on board.
And just a reminder that we still have some baliwaves.com T-Shirts and stickers available for ya’s here in Bali so drop me a line.
Mentawai islands ; The good guys from the Kandui Surf Resort have sent us through another new batch of photos showing off more perfection in their part of Ind o. And you’ll be able to suss them out in the Surf Report section. Here’s another baliwaves bonus for ya’s dept; Anyday now we’ll also be providing ya’s with surf reports and photos from the Macaronis Surf Resort up in the Mentawai’s. I was talking to a couple of friends yesterday who have been out on charter in the Ments and they reckon if they ever make it back up there again they won’t be going on a boat after stopping off in the Surf Resorts. That’s where they’ll be heading. The Surf Resorts up there just make it all too easy for their guests with speed boats to zap you around all day and then back to the Resort for R & R in the evenings.
We also have a NEW Home Base guest house close by to Airport Left and the other breaks of the Outer Reefs, 5 min walk. This place is more private and spacious with big air conditioned rooms, hot and cold water, tv and plenty of off street parking all enclosed in Balinese style. The rooms are AU$16.00 for a room with big double bed and AU$30.00 for a twin share room.
For the surfer / fisherman out there, and isn’t there a little bit of fisherman in all of us ? Well you guys can take a look at the fishing report and photos from the last couple of trips out sport fishing here in Bali

Money saver tip #752 : Anyone wanting to get out on a 3 island 7 day boat charter to Lembongan, Lombok and Sumbawa drop me a line cause I was talking to an operator last night and he’s offering the all inclusive trips for just AU$600.00 !!! Start organizing your crew now for the recommencement of these charters in March 08. Better still charter the boat privately with up to 10 of your friends for AU$6,000. all inclusive.
If it’s somewhere a little more private you’r looking for take a look at the private bungalow for rent we have in our Business Directory and drop the owner Michael Owen an email. Michael is one of the old school surfers who rubs shoulders with the likes of Gerry Lopez and Peter McCabe just to name a couple of Indo Legends.
Finally, I just wanna refresh ya’s about what baliwaves.com is all about. We’re not trying to flog ya’s surf trips or sell ya’s anything for that matter, we’re just trying to show ya’s how good it is here in Bali / Indonesia for a surfing holiday. We want you guys to come over and have a ball and then go back home and tell your friends how good it is.
Best Regards from the No.1 surfing holiday destination that’s got it all, BALI , see ya’s here in 2008
