Kandui Surf Resort July 1st surf report
Broken promises, shattered dreams! The swell was pumping this morning and
excitement was in the air. But it was not long before reality set in and the east
winds started to blow stronger and stronger. You have to be kidding me! Rifles is
8 foot plus Hawaiian and the best surfers in the world are on the island, and it is
howling onshore! A quick check of the waves that were offshore with the east winds
showed that the straight south swell was not getting in there. Some of the other
crew surfed small, clean Beng Beng, but the rest could only look out at the huge
sets at Rifles and pray for a wind switch that would never come. Eventually, Kelly
and, I believe, Shane took the ski and went searching for SOMETHING that would get
the blood pumping but would have good winds. They came back with news of a pretty
sick slab they had found. It wasn’t long before we were all on the boat and, after
seeing a set, the guys were quickly in the
water. Andy then Kelly got a couple of sick waves right off the bat! I had never
seen anyone surf this reef and, if you are not as good as these guys, I would avoid
it! It’s a sucky drop, followed by a near close out barrel that likes to blink and
decapitate people! For the average surfer, it’s a nightmare, but these guys were
pulling it off and getting some sick barrels! After an hour or so, the sets seemed
to slow down as well as the wind, so we pulled anchor and surfed Karambat Right.
It’s a little surfed spot because Rifles is usually good when it’s breaking, but
Rifles was still pretty chunky so this was the next best thing going. It was head
high or so, but it’s fast and fairly long and the guys would get up a lot of speed
for their sick snaps and airs. The photogs got some really good shots from the
back of the wave with the setting sun as the back drop. Super cool. Meanwhile,
Andy was doing jump offs at Rifles that
allowed him to surf the bumpy 8 foot Hawaiian freight trains that were pumping
through Rifles. Good for him! Our swell is supposed to fade tomorrow, but we
still are hoping for a wind switch and a good Rifles session.
Kandui Surf Resort June 30 surf report
We woke up to what we thought were north winds this morning, but a quick Bankvaults
check with our new jet ski brought back news that the wind had some west in it and
it was junk over there, so we hovered around the resort and surfed 4 Bobs and waited
for our new swell to arrive. As the day wore on, the winds lightened up and turned
more west, and our swell filled in as forecast. By midday we were surfing Rifles.
It was a little crowded, but the other guys in the water were glad to let Kelly,
Andy, Ross, and Potts have the set waves they wanted. There were sick barrels, sick
snaps, sick airs… Everyone was quite content to become spectators when those guys
got a wave. I’ll post some pictures soon. Ours swell is predicted to pick up more
overnight and winds are predicted to be light. Shane Dorian has flown in and he is
coming out on a ferry tonight to join his friends. We are hoping for a special day
tomorrow!
