21 July 2008, Kuta-Bali: The Coca-Cola ISC Tour is delighted to officially announce that Rip Curl has been selected as the presenting sponsor for the 6 star prime Scar Reef Pro West Sumbawa by the event organizers in Taliwang, West Sumbawa.
An independent group of surfers based in Scar Reef have been working tirelessly during the last three years In efforts to promote surfing and tourism in the West Sumbawa area, and have recently achieved the first step towards their their goal by successfully obtaining the promise of funding from the Bupati (Governor of West Sumbawa).
The second step has been finalized today with their agreement with Rip Curl Indonesia to become the presenting sponsor. “We are very happy today that we have Rip Curl as a partner for helping us with our event. They are experts in both the promotion and the running of surfing contests, and with them we are assured that it will be a big success,” explained Ago, one of the directors of the event that was in Bali today to finalize the agreement with Rip Curl’s Marketing Manager for South East Asia, Clemens Berger.
“Though we are pretty busy right now with our new building, one contest in a waiting period and another already scheduled, we still didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to get involved in this one. It is consistent with our Search theme and nobody has done a comp at Scar Reef, so we are really excited to have the chance help to develop surfing in the West Sumbawa area,” said Clemens.
ISC CEO Tipi Jabrik was in West Sumbawa several weeks ago to do a site inspection meet with local government officials and event organizers Ago and Cahyo in preparation for the event. “Scar Reef is really a unique spot, with very pristine beaches, clean water, and a high quality wave. Our ISC surfers will be really happy to come here and get barreled at this spot for sure! And its great that the government wants to support the development of surfing here, thanks to the efforts of Ago and Cahyo” he said.
There will not only be a six star prime ISC pro surfing competition with over Rp 60 million in total prize money but the event organizers are planning a beach volleyball tournament, live music, traditional dancing, and other entertainment for the local people to enjoy as well as to introduce them to the sport of surfing.
In order to provide for the best waves in which to run the contest, a waiting period has been set starting on August 27 and ending on September 5th. The majority of the non-surfing program will take place on Saturday the 30th and Sunday the 31st of August.
Scar Reef is a world class offshore lefthand reef break located about 45 minutes away from the town of Taliwang in West Sumbawa. During the peak season from May through September Scar Reef can give up multiple barrel sections as well as long carveable walls. Its name comes from the toll it can take when things go wrong and the reef meets the skin of the unlucky barrel seeker. Scar Reef can usually be surfed all day long in all tide levels, but a lower tide give up the best shaped waves.
