****MORNING SURF UP-DATE**** And a big good morning to everyone tuning into the baliwaves.com Sunday Session coming to ya’s live from the N0.1 surfing holiday destination of Bali.
My 7.00am surf recon of the Outer Reefs here in Tuban was looking real positive for scoring some nice waves in the 2-4ft+ range between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. The first of our tides today will be a 2.4mtr High around 11.00am and then seeing as though we have just gone 2 days past the New Moon we’ll have a reef draining 0.1mtr Low around 5.30pm. Hardly any wind out there earlier and only just now at 9.30am is the ESE off-shore Tradewind starting to blow.
Kuta Reef has some niced shaped waves peeling off in the shoulder to head high plus and should continue breaking until well after lunch. But while I was on the beach there was wave after waves of boat filled surfers heading out there.
Middle Reef was picking up more solid sized action with wave height well over head still. Middle will improve as the tide turns and starts it’s run back out.
Airport Left also had an armada of boats parked in the channel but she was beaking consistently in the shoulder to head high plus division.
Uluwatu ; No news in from down at the Search contest yet this morning but I’d have to imagine wave height would have to still be pushing the 4-6ft range for the final day. We should have more photos from the Search when Scotto gets back to Home Base later this afternoon.
Keramas ; Reports in from there was saying wave height was breaking solidly in the 4-5ft+ range and every one that was not in the contest at Uluwatu or anyone that was already taken out of the event were up there.
Dragon Fly Pt further up the coast from Keramas was breaking perfectly in the 3-4ft range but the sad news is that there was a jet ski crew and surfers filming there this morning. Hopefully they won’t turn it into another circus as they did with Keramas…
Weather wise there was a bit of cloud around through the early hours but it’s cleared up nicely and we have a sunny Sunday for the beach lovers in Bali.
Swell Forecast (29th July – 4th August) So as I mentioned already pretty small surf around for the remainder of today the 29th. But hold onto ya hats because starting tomorrow the 30th we should have some solid waves hitting our reefs that will hold through into the 31st then slightly dropping off a touch. Then right behind her we have another swell moving into position for the weekend before tapering off early next week
Ok so plenty of waves happening around Bali today and ya could virtually have taken your pick of locations on either side of the island (except for Uluwatu of course). I have to apologise about the New Video Clips as Revver’s website was having some tech problems at the time I loaded the new clips. But hopefully you will be able to down load the 2 New Clips by now. I’ve also dropped another 160 photos into the July Surfing Gallery so take a look at those while your waiting for the Video’s. The boys from Kandui Surfing resort in the Mentawai’s have also sent us some sick sick photos of there recent swell and you’ll find those on there surf report page.
And just a reminder that we still have some baliwaves.com T-Shirts and FREE stickers available for ya’s here in Bali so drop me a line.
Mentawai islands ; The good guys from the Kandui Surf Resort have sent us through another new batch of photos showing off more perfection in their part of Ind o. And you’ll be able to suss them out in the Surf Report section. Here’s another baliwaves bonus for ya’s dept; Anyday now we’ll also be providing ya’s with surf reports and photos from the Macaronis Surf Resort up in the Mentawai’s. I was talking to a couple of friends yesterday who have been out on charter in the Ments and they reckon if they ever make it back up there again they won’t be going on a boat after stopping off in the Surf Resorts. That’s where they’ll be heading. The Surf Resorts up there just make it all too easy for their guests with speed boats to zap you around all day and then back to the Resort for R & R in the evenings.
We also have a NEW Home Base guest house close by to Airport Left and the other breaks of the Outer Reefs, 5 min walk. This place is more private and spacious with big air conditioned rooms, hot and cold water, tv and plenty of off street parking all enclosed in Balinese style. The rooms are AU$16.00 for a room with big double bed and AU$30.00 for a twin share room.
For the surfer / fisherman out there, and isn’t there a little bit of fisherman in all of us ? Well you guys can take a look at the fishing report and photos from the last couple of trips out sport fishing here in Bali
Don’t forget if any of you lot want to grab some photos or video footage surfing here in Bali and we can easily arrange it for ya.
Money saver tip #752 : Anyone wanting to get out on a 3 island 7 day boat charter to Lembongan, Lombok and Sumbawa drop me a line cause I was talking to an operator last night and he’s offering the all inclusive trips for just AU$600.00 !!! Start organizing your crew now for the recommencement of these charters in March 08. Better still charter the boat privately with up to 10 of your friends for AU$6,000. all inclusive.
If it’s somewhere a little more private you’r looking for take a look at the private bungalow for rent we have in our Business Directory and drop the owner Michael Owen an email. Michael is one of the old school surfers who rubs shoulders with the likes of Gerry Lopez and Peter McCabe just to name a couple of Indo Legends.
Finally, I just wanna refresh ya’s about what baliwaves.com is all about. We’re not trying to flog ya’s surf trips or sell ya’s anything for that matter, we’re just trying to show ya’s how good it is here in Bali / Indonesia for a surfing holiday. We want you guys to come over and have a ball and then go back home and tell your friends how good it is.
Best Regards from the No.1 surfing holiday destination that’s got it all, BALI , see ya’s here in 2008

RipCurl Search Uluwatu 2nd Aug 08
Kelly Slater Out in Round Three of Rip Curl Pro Search – Taken Down by
the Portugese Tiger Tiago Pires
2 August, Somewhere-Indonesia: The man didn’t become world champion 8
times by making mistakes, but it seemed today that maybe if Kelly
Slater would have hassled Tiago Pires just a bit more in the last few
seconds of the heat, given that he had priority, the lead, and less
than a minute to go, there would have been a different headline in the
news
To paraphrase his words in a press conference at the opening ceremony
before the start of the Rip Curl Pro Search, there is always an
element of luck in competitive surfing, and sometimes your runs out.
But the show goes on and he is still way out in front in the ASP
rankings, so now its time for the other guys to battle it out and see
if anyone can catch him.
The days action started off at about 7:45am with a rising tide and
solid 4-6 foot barrels on offer. Bede Durbidge continued his run by
getting the best of Danny Wills in Heat 1.
Joel Parkinson put on another stellar performance in Heat 4, getting a
nice barrel in the first minute of the heat and by the time the horn
blew he could boast two of the highest scores of the day, a 9.17 and a
9.23, leaving South African Royden Bryson to go free surfing during
the rest of his stay Somewhere.
Bobby Martinez also showed his usual talented barrel-riding skills,
choosing the highline and blazing down the barrel like a bullet to
emerge and tack on a couple of turns. Michael Campbell was on the
ropes for most of the heat, but mounted a comeback and narrowly lost
by just over a point at the end.
In Heat 9 Mick Fanning left no doubt that his barrel riding is second
to none, getting only two waves but posting a 7.17 and a 9.17 to combo
Rodrigo, whose also only had two waves that totaled 3.90.
The wave conditions were changed every couple of heats, with some
heats having few lulls and a decent number of good set waves, and
other heats would have 10-minute lulls and then 3-4 waves sets. But
it was still very contestable, just requiring good judgment on wave
