Kandui Surf Resort; Nov 27 surf report
Happy Thanksgiving!
I was off the island for a few days. I heard I missed some good Rifles the day
after I left. Figures! It was unusually small for a stretch after that. There was
a decent day at Kandui’s. I saw some pictures and it was going a few feet
overhead. Just a few of my friends out. Other than that, it was just 4 Bobs that
kept everyone happy.
We have one guest on the island right now. “Singapore Al” wanted to come down and
surf for week. Being the only guest on the island, he had to pay a little more but
he was more than happy to do so and he has been reaping the benefits! We have been
surfing head high to a few feet overhead surf everyday at Nipusi and Pistols, with a
little 4 Bobs thrown in. We have been surfing by ourselves most the time with only
a stray boat around once in a while.
Today we were expecting a swell, and we got it! It was good timing for Singapore Al
and our long time guest and now partner in Kandui, Drew, who arrived last night and
was ready for some surf. We pulled up to empty Bankvaults just as a set peeled down
the reef. The sun was out and it was glassy. Drew yelled, “I want my money back!”
We all had a laugh, then got out there for a nice session. Waves were going several
feet overhead on the sets and it seemed to be getting bigger. We got so many
waves! Mercifully, the wind turned onshore just enough to start crumbling the waves
a bit and that was a good enough excuse to get out and refuel at the resort. The
winds quickly turned for the better though, and we digested and got back to
Bankvaults. It was as empty as we left it, only now it was bigger and cleaner! Sets
were going double overhead with an occasional plus and there were some nice
barrels! There was also hell to pay if you
were on the wrong side of a set, but we all got some nice barrels. We surfed until
the sun went down. Completely exhausted, we cracked some Bintangs on the boat and
watched the sunset behind the empty waves.
We had to ask ourselves, where can you go in this day and age and get surf like that
to yourself all day long, then motor a short distance to stay in a place as nice as
our resort? Hmmmm, maybe nowhere!!! All we could think was, we love the “off”
season! Please don’t tell anybody we can get waves like this all year round!
We are probably looking at a little smaller surf tomorrow, but still plenty fun.
