Burleigh Heads Gold Coast Australia.
Ok well today the 10th January I was down at Snapper trying my luck with all the
other weekend crew by 530am. Off the rock was not really happening with the majority
of people sitting down towards Rainbow Bay. I paddled out at Snapper caught a couple
of waves and then made my way down into Rainbow and on into Greenmount. The tide was
coming in and quickly filled the waves in. There was still waves to be had when I
walked back up the beach an hour and half later, but I was done. I thought that I
would go and take some photos for you all so that was plan for the rest of the day.
I Headed home grabbed some grub and headed up to Burleigh. I wonted to catch some of
the single fin action that was going down. Everyone has to ride boards that were
built in 1985 or before. This means some of the gommets were riding boards that were
older than they were. This is a very popular competition, and alot of big names make
appearances for the fun factor thats involved. Guys like 99′ world champ Occy, Luke
Egan, and last years top 44 surfer Jay “Bottle” Thompson were a few of the names I
saw while I was on site. Bottle was the standout making his heat in undies. Don’t
ask me why its all part of the fun factor I guess. The best barrell I witnessed was
from one of the older boys, back hand, deep, then inside again for number two before
coming out clean and happy.
I hung around for a couple hours and then headed back to Coolangatta to meet up with
a friend I had not seen for a while. While chatting I was also in prime position to
see that the waves were still coming through Greemount with regularity. They were
also still in the 3ft+ range. I saw one guy go for a good couple of hundred metres
on a wall of water that didn’t even look like stopping.
OK swell has come up again or I was just surfing in the wrong spot yesterday. We did
have a southerly change come through yesterday afternoon and it has blown all night.
I am hopeing that the waves will come up again tomorrow another touch as I will back
on the grind come Monday.
Till next time. Scott.
