Kandui Surf Resort, Jan 4th surf report
We had a couple of guests, Charlie and Mellita, come over to spend Christmas and New Year’s with us. Their timing was very good! Honestly, December was below average for surf, even by seasonal standards, but the last week was great! It started off with fun Burger world and a little bit of Nipusi. But a sizable swell was in the forecast and, even though we knew the waves would be fun here, we wanted to maximize our luck of getting a swell like that this time of year so we planned a road trip to HT’s. The westish swell would get in there well and the forecasted west winds would be offshore. Everybody knows that HT’s is one of the best waves in the world when it’s on, but the crowds there in the regular season takes away much of the fun. We figured that this time of year there was sure to be next to no one there. We were right!
We pulled up the afternoon of the 30th to see perfect conditions, waves a few feet
overhead with only a couple of westerners out and a few locals that were calling us
to come out and join them! We jumped out and scored some good ones before dark. The next day was BIG! A little too big at times with waves breaking on god knows what reef and rolling all the way in. At the peak of the swell, the conditions
weren’t very good anyway with pouring rain and stong winds but, as luck would have it, as the swell started to drop the conditions got good again! The next day was still bombing, but no clean up sets. Very nice! Conditions were good in the
morning and afternoon with some funky winds midday. No problem. The tide was
sketchy then anyway. The swell was dying fast the next day, but we still managed to get some overhead waves with perfect conditions early on. We left late morning with smiles on our faces!
Unfortunately, our pictures are not nearly as good as they could have been because of the frequent thick clouds and rain, coupled with the fact that we had to beach our boat because there was no good place to keep it with all that swell and had to shot from the beach. Oh well, we still have a couple for the memory book. I’ll attach a few and some Burgerworld photos as well.
Fun trip. Hat’s off to Jenny, my pregnant wife, for letting me go. She had to
spend our second wedding anniversary and New Years on the island while was off
getting barreled. That’s a good woman! I will attach a picture of the abandoned
girls on New Year Eve. They didn’t have it too bad!
We got back to the island and continued our good luck with getting some fun
Burgerworld again, and also got a little pulse in swell, surfing overhead Nipusi on
our guest’s last day. They had a great trip and surfed either by themselves or with
light crowds everyday of their trip in 80+ degree water.
What’s the water temp in your neck of the woods today?
I just saw a four wave, head high set peel through 4 Bobs and nobody is out, but I’m too tired to go take advantage of it! No problem. There is another swell coming in a couple of days!
