****MORNING SURF UP-DATE****
Howdy folks and thanks for dropping by the baliwaves for todays new on surfing and weather conditions here on the without a doubt best surfing holiday destination on the planet, Bali.
This mornings 6.30am surf check on the Outer Reefs, my wind and swell indicators were showing wave height to have dropped off from yesterdays 2-3ft+ down into the 1-2ft range between Kuta Reef and Airport left. A big change from yesterdays clean and glassy conditions as well with the wind already up coming out of the West – South West with gusts up to 10-12knot.
Tidal info for today has a 0.5mtr Low @ 9.00am and then filling back in with a 2.2mtr High around the 3.00pm mark.
Looking for a wave this morning I think that Serangan would be the first place to check as the wind may tend more to the SSW through out the morning. Sri-Lanka also handles a little South in the wind if there is still enough swell.
Weather wise this morning we did have a few drops of rain around dawn but nothing like yesterdays flood rain. Right now at 8.00am we have a mainly overcast sky with some blue showing through it. Temperature wise it’ll be another warm and humid 28-30 degree’s Celsius by midday.
Baliwaves Tip #001. My last few trips to Serangan and at Keramas I’ve seen a lot of people get “sea urchin spines” in their feet. You don’t only find these nasty little creatures at these two locations but at just about any surfing location that has rock and reef. It’s pretty futile to try and cut them out or even pull them out with tweezers as they are very brittle and only break apart. The last time I was unlucky enough to get some stuck in between my toes… was up at Medewi. Being in a very awkward spot I went to a doctor to see if they could be removed. He told me it was just best to leave them in and within a week to ten days they should disolve. So just a heads up if your walking out for a wave over a rocky bottom, try and walk on the high spots and watch where you are putting your feet if possible.
Re; My comments on Sea Urchins in yesterdays surf report. Since then Bruce from up in Sumatra has contributed some priceless info on the subject. You can find Bruce’s words of wisdom in our comments..
Changing dollars to Rupiah on the streets of Kuta; –1US$=Rp9,265 — 1AU$=Rp8,600 — rates will vary from vendor to vendor.
Swell Forecast for the period 23rd Jan through till the 29th Jan isn’t looking real crash hot. Today Saturday is showing wave height to be still holding in the 2-3ft+ range on the more open swell locations. Sunday see’s wave height dropping off into the 1-3ft before fading out to 1-2ft come Monday afternoon. Tuesday see’s a small bump in size putting us back into the 2-3ft range, that will hopefully hold through Wednesday. Thursday through to next Saturday and it’ll be back to 1-2ft+. NB: 2-3ft is equivilant to waist to head high surf. So nothing spectacular for Bali wave standards but still we should be able to find a wave or two if you know where and when to look. Plus who knows what may pop onto the radar between now and next week ?.
