Kandui Surf Resort Mentawai Islands
July 13th surf report.
Honestly, when we got the surf forecasts at the beginning of this last trip, it was
not looking good. We usually get a swell every 3 days or so this time of year. Our
new group just missed one swell before they arrived and then the Indian ocean
decided to go dormant for what should have been the next swell so our guys ended up
having a week of just head high or a little overhead surf. That might sound great,
but we are used to much better than that! Our guests were good surfers and they
were trying every surf sacrifice in the book, most involving Bintangs, and one of
the boys, Ox, decided he would take matters into his own hands. Drastic times call
for drastic measures so Ox shattered the record for one day consumption of beer at
Kandui by drinking 34 beers. That’s not a misprint. 34 beers! Don’t try this at
home! That was a professional at work. Well,
that seemed to please the swell gods because a big red blob appeared on the map
soon after wards! When the swell arrived and we started wishing Ox had drank less
beer because it was more swell than most of us wanted. It was the biggest swell of
the season and one of the biggest days at Rifles ever! It was pretty out of
control though with a strong current and very hard to paddle in. Our jet skis had
to make several rescues with people breaking boards leases, or being swept out to
sea. Towing in was the call for getting the big ones and we got some bombs doing
that. Things settled down by the afternoon and we had a great session then. Still
well overhead, clean, with classic Rifles barrels spinning down the reef. Thanks
Ox! Oh yeah, some of the guys scored some secret lefts on
this swell as well and Ox reaped the benefits.
