****AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE****
Hello surfers and thanks for cruizing by the baliwaves for today’s run down on surfing and weather conditions from here on the surfing worlds favorite holiday destination of Bali.
Well not looking real good on the Outer Reefs this morning with only half footers lapping onto the reef between Kuta reef and Airport left. We were planning on heading over to Keramas on the East Coast at first but the wind was already howling out of the ESE-SE @ 6.00AM. So we just opted for Uluwatu knowing it would be the best option for size and conditions. As you can see in today’s photo gallery Ulu still had chest to over head waves hitting the Main Peak. But as it had to be, with no other options for a paddle it was pretty darn crowded.
Swell predictions are saying we will have to wait until Wednesday for the next solid swell to arrive. Not much happening till then I’m afraid.
Surfing conditions were clean and glassy down at Uluwatu on the Main Peak and Racetrack sections but blown out on Temple’s. Around 11.00AM the wind cleaned up swinging more to the East.
Tidal info for today had us down for a 1.9mtr High @ 7.00AM and then running out for a 0.7mtr Low around 2.00PM.
Weather wise it was cloudy and grey for morst of today with the odd sunny patch. temperature wise it was still a warm to hot 31 degree’s Celsius.
The sms text surf report from the G-Land Surf Camp was calling wave height to be about as small as it gets for G-Land, waist to head high set waves hitting Kongs and Money Tree’s. Three surfers in the water enjoying themselves at 7.00AM.
baliwaves.com is still offering anyone who wants to get over to the legendary location of G-Land (www.g-landsurfcamp.com) an honest 15% discount. Hey slim ,love your site mate !!! I just wanted to say that I have been surfing in Indo especially Bali for 20 years, the hordes of Euro kooks from non surfing countries that are inandating the reefs are completely fucking the place, they have no place being in line ups with any waves of consequence !!!! they are are danger not only to them selves but the entire line up my mate was almost scalped at airports a few weeks back by a swedish kook who threw his board away on the set with out looking , I personally have 4 stitches in my foot courtesy of a Euro gumboot who fell out of the lip his board hit me in the head and faded me onto almost dry reef he received two nice hard punches to the face for his efforts , they need to seriously take a look at decomishoning a large proportion of the the surf school’s especially the one’s being operated by people with no surfing ability from non surfing countries anyone who whom has spent time in Bali would know who and where I’m referring to, Balinese,Aussies, japanese.Brazzies the yanks have all managed to get there share in Indo without to many Drama’s, this has kept a cool vibe in the air even with steadily growing crowd’s if these kook’s are allowed to keep disrespecting the line up especially the local’s this is going to force a Hawain type localism which is the the last thing Bali need’s !!!! It is bad enough that I have to put up with them when in bali only to return and have to put up with them fucking up the point’s at home in Noosa , I liked them alot more when they wore cut off jean’s played soccer on the beach and did not own surfboard’s Euro kooks fuck off
drew says
Fucking oath Mate
slim says
Yeah I have to agree with everything you have said on this subject mate. There was a surf school (1 of 3) operating on the shallow reef at Balangan a couple of days back. They had a couple of “enforcer” type locals blocking and protecting their money, I mean students. One of the female instructors could hardly lie, or paddle her board. The first 1 foot foamy she came to (instructor mind you) she without even trying to duck dive just threw her board without even looking behind her. And that was only a 1ft foamy. Balangan is a fast peeling wave over a hard and sharp bottom, what are surf schools even thinking about ? But unfortunately these surf schools are making big money from the Euro sector, it’s going to be hard, if not impossible to pull them back. These people could just as easy be *surfing on the beach breaks, where once apon a time it was the mandatory place to learn. I mean all they do is take off after being pushed into the wave without looking to see if there is anyone already on the wave.
glenn mitchel says
but their chicks are ok.
rob says
Hi guy’s
I could not agree more !!! all the competant surfers who have supported Bali for ever and a day who leave plenty of coin in the Balinese/Indonesian economy are having their hard earnt yearly surf trips trip experience fucked up by euro back packers who stay in very cheap accommodation for long period’s of time and spend **** all, they are ruining every line up in Bali from Noth to South to East, the annoying thing is the vast majority of these kooks who are ruining thing’s with there presence in the line up will not even continue surf on there return to europe as they don’t even have surf in their country , I really wish they would stay the **** out of the line up, I saw a pommy kook who owns/runs a surf school near Cunggu using his paid lackies to block and he can’t even do a cut back , I hope the the indonesian tourism board realise they are risking their loyal high spending tourism market for a low spending transient market with the backpackers , I personally know alot of people and family’s that are turning away from Bali as a holiday destination directly due to the impact that these kooks are having on the surfing scene , I think they need to regulate the industry and isolate the surf school’s to kuta beach and keep these people of the reef’s and point’s, I agree with the stated above Euro kook’s **** off
davo says
f in bali is kuta beachbreak , i have 2 special oleh -oleh from an aussie kook actually , who lastyear couldnt duckdive a waisthigh wave and he was caught up in the whitewater and washed backwards for 30 metres untill he went into my head fins first resulting in 5 stitches to my temple and 12 more stitches to the back of my head , ive had hundreds
davo says
ATTENTION ALL KOOKS !!!!!
( ie ; beginner surfers and dickheads who claim they can surf ):
YOU MUST NEVER NEVER NEVER PADDLE IN FRONT OF A SURFER WHO IS TAKING OFF OR RIDING A WAVE …
This is the LAW , and is punishable by DEATH ,
YOU must ALWAYS make every superhuman effort possible , to try and get out of the way …,
YOU are EXPECTED (by LAW ) to paddle around / and behind the Surfer who is the rider claiming the wave .
Most of the time YOU WILL have to let the wave break on your head , or paddle to behind the riding surfer . and then attempt a duckdive behind the riding surfer ( never paddle IN FRONT of a riding surfer as this is a sin )…., even if it means you get totally smashed – ” this is your duty ” … If you do this you will get “respect” ( and maybe some good tips , or waves to come your way), if you dont do this you will be HATED, DROPPED IN ON, ABUSED, AND RUN OVER, AND POSSIBLY BEATEN UP ALSO .
ATTENTION !!!!!! YOU ARE EXPECTED TO GET TOTALLY SMASHED BY THE WAVE – SO THAT YOU DO NOT GET IN SOMEONES WAY . IF YOU PADDLE OVER THE SHOULDER TO AVOID DUCKDIVING , AND GET IN SOMEONES WAY – You have just ruined someones wave , and you have done the wrong thing – YOU ARE A KOOK , and this will not be TOLERATED( except under EXTREME and VERY VERY VERY RARE circumstanses ) …. These are the rules World Wide OK !!!
HEY KOOK !!!!! – IF YOU CANT DUCKDIVE , OR TAKE ANY SIZED WAVE ON THE HEAD , in an effort to get out of the way …., THEN F*ck OFF , and learn somewhere else = AWAY from other people.
PS – IMPORTANT NOTE : …. LOOK AROUND YOU FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN THE WATER ” BEFORE ” YOU ( the kook ) DECIDE TO THROW YOUR SURFBOARD . YOU ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN CONTROLL OF YOUR BOARD AT ALL TIMES !!!!!!
THIS IS THE LAW !!!!!!!!!!! LEARN IT – LIVE IT – OR F*CK OFF !!!!!
Archy says
I think its too late to change the mentality of new surfers in Bali. Sadly money talks and that’s why Bali is turning out the way it is. You will find Bali will be left to the kooks and real surfers will go else where. Look at Ulus as a prime example. Every year you see less and less of the anual surfers who have spent years here surfing the season. Mabe just leave it too the kooks! They still bring money in!
slim says
Come on Archy that would be quitting I can remember surfing at Newcastle beach in Australia 25yrs ago with 100 kooks out on any Sunny Sunday and it was fun to spray em in the eye’s and go as close as ya could to see the fear.
It’s like a saying I once heard, there are smokers and there are quitters. I ain’t no quitter 🙂
davo says
The law must be enforced , the pecking order must be maintained , good surfers who obey the rules and are respectfull of the pecking order and LOCALS shall be eligable for a wave , Those who do not obey this LAW will always be at the end of the line to fight for the scraps .
PS …….,
IF YOU CLAIM A WAVE on take off ) ie; you called out to stop someone else taking the wave , eg… “OI” , HEY, MY WAVE Etc …. and you pulled back (ie; you didnt go for it , or you changing your mind after youve called the wave , or you didnt make the wave because you sat too deep , or you fell off etc …….., MEANS YOU GO TO THE END OF THE LINE OK
craig says
and who enforces these rules? why dont they already?
davo says
O come on Craig , what rock have you been hiding under , its obvious that you are a kook with no idea , or you come from and have been surfing on a secret and remote island with no other surfers your entire life …, but then again you would not have internet access would you ? These rules (and others) have been enforced thoughout time as surfing became popular and breaks became crowded since the 1960,s . These rules have been enforced in many numbers of ways over the many , many years the world over …, and they will either be be thrown down your throat ,or explaned to you gently , and you will find out the easy way if you are smart , or it will be the hard way -up to you ….
Hey Craigey Boy – Next time your out surfing/kooking it …., Go ask a BIG Hawaiian , or a pack of LOCALS who are domonating the local break what you think about those rules – lol
ps craigey – if you learn the ALL the rules , and THEN you might gain respect (in that order) , then we can PROGRESS to taking turns for waves on the uncrowded days.
slim says
you got my vote Snowy. it’s the way it is, er, I mean was !
craig says
Who u calling a kook idiot.? How come the big hawaiians and locals dont do anything now was my point. And there are plenty of good web cams in oz.
slim says
I’ll just jump the gun and answer this on behalf of Snowy. I don’t know about your surfing abilities ok so I’ll stay away from that part 🙂
But I tell you that if certain people get dropped in on or run over (even a near miss is enough) snaked or just too greedy. the shit will hit the fan. The point is the un written laws of surfing are in place already, and with the growing number of surfers in the water people had better be aware of them, surf schools shouldn’t be just pushing *newbies/kooks (we called em “egg rolls” when I was a grommet, circa ’70) into waves on those cursed soft top mals. But I’d have to say that at least half of these un credited surf instructors don’t even know these basic common rules of surfing. Maybe in the western world if you get a punch in the face in the surf you can call the cops or the *clubbies. Not here in Bali I don’t thinks. Sharing a wave, doing cross overs with a friend is cool, but watch out if you drop in on a big bad wolf.
rob says
I won’t quit on the place guys, I love Bali and especially love the people and the waves !!!! don’t let these non surfing surf school operator’s and and their euro kook clientele send you elsewhere because the Balinese are the ones who will ultimately miss out on you tourist dollars, just start issuing these fucking kook’s with some serious fucking beating’s they will have to learn the hard way !!! and guy’s if you see these non surfing operators out and about don’t be shy to let them know what you think of them. Real waves for for surfer’s euro kook’s Fuck off
rob says
Hey craig , with your comment’s I have a distinct feeling you are the exact kind of kook everyone above is referring to !!! if you think local Balinese and Hawaiins don’t enforce line ups and issue beatings
I suggest you stick to watching or riding a soft top at Kookta beach ya.
jeff says
I think Rob is actually Slim. I have been coming to Bali for 30 years and have never seen Balinese or Hawiians beat anyone except once at karemas when they fought each other! If you idiots think that violance will solve anything and not just aggrivate the problems I suggest you are part of the problem. Localism and idiot foriegners who pretend they are locals will ruin the vube.
baliwaves says
Hi Jeff, Troy here. I can assure you Rob is not actually slim. Rob appears to be sitting in Brisbane Queensland based on his IP address. But otherwise I agree with you, there are a lot of idiots and violence is not the way to go…
slim says
You think / assume wrong Jeffry. I was out fishing all day yesterday. That’s what I do most through the “silly season” to avoid the city surfers that flock to Bali but still think they are out at “their” local break. Maybe you have been coming to Bali for your holidays for a long time but I guess your not here all year round. I have 1 email address dude, and I don’t waste my time pretending to be some one else !
BTW, I’m glad you have “never seen” any violence…. except for 1 occasion…… 🙂
Slim
Adams says
egg rolls yes… i wonder if that term was exclusively Newy? i can remember Newcastle surfers pelting panel vans and westies’cars with eggs…
slim says
Hmmm, yeah sounds like the 70’s in Newcastle for sure 🙂
Todd says
Build more reefs
davo says
whats the problem with people that they cant understand that the surf has had rules put in place over the last 50 years . They have stood the test of time , and will always continue to be in place.
If you ignore the rules of the road you increase the likelyhood of an accident resulting in damage to yourself ….. Ignore the rules of surfing and expect the same to happen , from a loose nut who will smash the living shit out of you – to a 16 year old letting your tyres down in the carpark , or whatever . No one is condoning violence here , but please dont close your eyes to the obvious. Learning the rules is a major part of LEARNING TO SURF.
PS – I dont know Slim , but he doesnt deserve shit over this subject , you look at Baliwaves.com for a reason (no-one makes you) , and Slim has to make a buck somehow ( we ALL DO ) He has informed you of lots of helpfull info etc etc etc , and replied to lots of emails from new visiters to Bali , and contributes to the local comunity . If anything the beginners and kooks can thank Slim and the other contributers for educating them THE EASY WAY , for helping to bring some of these “RULES” to your attention . Give respect before you receive it …, and pay your dues .
Happy surfing
