4 July 2012, Kuta-Bali, Kuta Beach will once again host the annual Quiksilver King of the Groms South East Asian Final over the weekend of July 7th and 8th, with Indonesia’s best 16 year old and under surfers competing for the coveted “King of the Groms SEA” title and an all expense paid trip to France.
The winning “King” will travel to Hossegor Beach in France to compete as one of only 18 other surfers from around the world in the King of the Groms International Final that will be held during the Quiksilver Pro from September 28 – October 8 2012.
Quiksilver’s 2-time “King” Andre Julian from Cimaja West Java will be on hand to give advice and to support his junior Quiksilver team mate 12 year old Rio Waida, who has been blowing up in every junior contest he enters. Rio has been surfing since he was 5 year old, and has been in the finals of the last 5 contests so far this year in Bali, winning 4 of them.
“I’m going to do my best to win and be the King of the Groms this year,” says Rio. “I really want to go to France so I can compete in the international King of the Groms and watch the Quiksilver Pro.”
Rio was invited to the Quiksilver Pro on the Goldcoast in Australia this last March, where he got to surf and hang out with all the pro surfers including 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater. “That was the most fun ever,” exclaimed Rio. “I got to surf at Snapper Rocks and D-Bah with some of the pro surfers, and got to meet and hang out with Kelly Slater!”
78 grommets (surfer slang for young surfers in their teens and below) signed up to compete in last year’s event and those numbers are expected to be beaten this year during this national school holiday weekend. And it looks like there will be no shortage of great waves for the competition either, as the forecast shows a 2.2 meter swell at 14 second intervals being predicted for Saturday’s start.
Again attending the King of the Groms event this year are Quiksilver surfing legends Mark Richards, Tom Carroll, Martin Potter, Matt Hoy, and Jake Paterson, who will be hanging out at the beach watching the groms and signing posters on both days, as well as competing in a fun Locals vs Legends surf competition on Sunday afternoon.
The King of the Groms SEA Final will be held during the 2nd annual Bali’s Big Eco Weekend, a combined effort on the part of Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and Quiksilver Indonesia to educate the local and national public and heighten the awareness of the environmental issues facing Bali today.
Day One of the King of the Groms competition will kick off at Halfways on Kuta Beach at 7 am, and will include a Roxy Jam Expression Session as well.
Day Two will see the conclusion of the King of the Groms event starting at 7 am, and the always fun Locals vs Legends taking place in the afternoon.
Don’t miss out on the biggest weekend event of the year at Kuta Beach, so tell all your friends and favorite people to come on down and enjoy all the action with you.
