Sunday 14, April – Pacitan, East Java:
It was a full day of non-stop action this Sunday in Pancer Door beach. Dian Hardiyanto won top place honors, leading him straight to the National Finals in Bali later on this year. total of 34 surfers coming from Pacitan, Jogjakarta and Pangandaran competed in a friendly atmosphere the coveted price of national finals.
During this GromSearch series #5, harsh competition of the “Under 14” and “Under 16” divisions pushed the young surfers to give the best of themselves. Despite a brown colored water caused by heavy rain in the previous days, Groms could enjoy perfect conditions during this sunny day, displaying pristine 2 to 3 feet left hand pointbreaks. “Pacitan is a little bit like surfing the Bono in Sumatra but here we have left-hand waves. The water is brown due to the rain but it didn’t prevent us from catching very good waves during the competition!” said Grom Dian Hardiyanto. Pacitan Boardriders added: “This competition is very exciting and everybody seems to be happy to be here!”
At lunchtime, kids participated in funny activities such as wheelbarrow race and sitting racing games. Groms also helped Rip Curl Crew in planting trees in a very friendly atmosphere and they fulfilled their commitment to environmental actions by respectfully helping in the traditional clean up of the beach. A funny fact is that at one point a wave broke on the shore, bringing back to the beach all the Groms together with their boards!
In the final of the “Under 16 division”, Dian Hardiyanto survived a tight heat and took top honors thanks to powerful smooth turns with a total of 12.1 points. Supriyanto, Hidir Jakah and Budi realized impressive performance all along the rounds, leading them to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place, respectively. In the “Under 14” boys division, Dede Yoga impressed judges with his sensational surfing style, confidently besting his rivals Fajar, Ibnul and Wiwid with a total of 11.4 points. Winners were all given a pack of goodies such as Rip Curl products, stickers, bags, shirts and Sticky Bumps wax.
At the end of the day, all GromSearch participants enjoyed a fish grill with spicy chilli together with an acoustic live music after party. “It was a beautiful day in Pacitan. We are stoked everybody enjoyed the competitions and it was an amazing experience both for the Groms and Rip Curl Crew. Thanks so much to Pacitan Boardriders for their participation in organizing the contest!” commented Rip Curl Team Manager Dylan Amar.
IMPORTANT: Due to a lack of swell, the original GromSearch Series#6 in Padang, Sumatra, is cancelled. The competition continues in Lakey Peak, Sumbawa on the 12th of May.
