BALI
27th – 28th July 2013
Howdy people and welcome to the weekend here on the baliwaves.com (keeping it real since 1999) for the latest news and hands down best views on surfing and weather conditions from here on the No.1 tropical surfing holiday destination the World know’s, BALI.
And yeah how about those waves we had yesterday down at Indonesia’s premier surfing location of Uluwatu, tubular or what. But anyway our first surf check was here in Tuban on the Outer Reefs. Right here in our own backyard the waves were pumping with 3-6ft lines breaking between Kuta Reef and Airport left. But by 8.00AM there were surfers turning up left right and center for the easier option.
Our next stop just for a quick look and a couple of line up photos was at Balangan (the last two photos in today’s 98 strong gallery) Balangan at 8.40AM had 25 surfers in the water and wave height freight training through just a bit too fast in the 3-5ft+ range
So we kept trucking south to Uluwatu, arriving just after 9.00AM . The tide was still filling in for a midday high and wave height was hitting the Main Peak and Temple sections in the 4-6ft class with the odd wave barreling off on the top of the Racetrack section. As the tide got higher it wasn’t long before the set waves were pushing into the 6-8ft+ sector. All the time the wind was a perfect ESE blowing clean off shore at Ulu.
The Main Peak had 60+ surfers on it by midday and some heaving tube rides for those who could handle the drops. While down at Temple’s a couple of the local boys were giving tube riding lessons to the 40 or so sitting down there. I’d have to say that yesterday saw some of the best tube’s and tube ride’s I’ve seen at Uluwatu this year and maybe for a long time longer. There must have been at least 20 snapped surfboards down at Uluwatu yesterday and the majority of these were not recovered.
Just snapping your board is really not that much of a drama after the initial shock of only seeing half a board attached to your leggie. The real drama then begins when you realize, shit, now I’ve gotta deal with big waves dredging out on the reef and a current sweeping down along infront of the cliffs trying to get back out to the ocean. Do you really want to deal with that, if you do, make sure your swim fitness is real good. Cause if you miss the cave entrance at Uluwatu it only leaves 2 choices. Swim back out to the line up and try and body surf one in and have another shot at the cave. Or let the current take you down to Padang Padang a couple of clicks away and try getting in down there. This is the High tide scenerio, low tide you can just get washed in up onto the reef..
It’s only happened to old Slim one time at Airport Right when my leggie snapped in only 5 foot waves on a dropping tide. I then had to try and walk in over the living coral reef to my board only 150mtrs away. That took me around an hour to do and a trillion little cuts on my feet (no reef boots).
Today the 28th of July and by looking at the waves we have today breaking on the Outer Reefs you wouldn’t know that yesterday was all time. Only 1-3 footers showing between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. KR and AL only producing some weak little waist high waves while Middle Reef this morning had some breaking in the waist to head high range.
Weather wise today it’s been a pretty nice Sunday with light off shore wind out of the East that slowly built some momentum to 8-10knot by midday. Outside right now at 2.30PM we have a mainly blue sky and the mercury sitting on 31 degree’s Celsius / Humidity level at 76%.
Today’s G-Land surf report came through at 8.00Am calling wave height to have also dropped right out and leaving only a waist to head high wave on the Ledge and inside Moneytree’s. Clean and light off shore wind and no surfers in the water at the time.
So if anyone is interested in going over to the legendary left hand wave, G-LAND of East Java contact me and baliwaves.com will hook ya’s up with a solid 10% discount.
Swell Forecasters (Stormsurf.com) are calling for another solid swell to start showing late this afternoon / evening. Peaking through tonight and into Monday morning and then slowing backing off through out the day. Tuesday will be back to small waves before another small to medium sized swell starts to show on Wednesday before dropping off for the remainder of the working week.
Hey and don’t forget the RipCurl Padang Padang Cup (main event) is still on when it’s on with still plenty of waiting period time left on the clock. So hopefully we’ll get the swell and the contest will run. We’ll keep you in the loop with any news of the event.
THE RIPCURL CUP IS ON HIGH ALERT STAND BY FOR MONDAY MORNING.
NB: Petrol price has finally been increased here in Indonesia with a 40% hike so you can expect prices right across the board to follow suit. Being a small island everything we need comes here by truck. I would expect our beloved Bintang beer to be the first to be jacked.
