10th June 2014, Kuta-Bali: Quiksilver Indonesia is delighted to announce the Quiksilver Padma Challenge, an ASC sanctioned Grade 1 Men’s and Women’s Open event that will be held at Padma Beach on June 21st as part of their annual Bali Big Eco Weekend.
Quiksilver, in conjunction with the Padma Boys Boardriders Club, will hold the first ASC event of the 2014 season, which will see Asia’s best men and women surfers frothing to get some ranking points on the board at the wave playground of Legian Beach. “Padma” is known as one of the most fun and varied beach break locations in the south Bali area with air, barrel and long carving sections possible on any given wave.
Quiksilver, with partners Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and Garuda Indonesia, stage an annual CSR effort named the Big Bali Eco Weekend in the Kuta/Legian and Uluwatu areas each June that includes beach cleanups, turtle releases, and other environmental programs. This year, in addition to the Padma Challenge, there will also be the second annual Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge where lucky punters can pay to surf in heats at Uluwatu with Quiksilver legends and team surfers including Mark Richards, Matt Hoy, Jake Paterson, Fred Patacchia and Craig Anderson, as well as Roxy surfers including current world number 2 ranked Sally Fitzgibbons, World Longboarding champion Kelia Moniz, Rosie Hodge and Bruna Schmitz
Quiksilver Marketing Executive Sammy Gosling is excited about staging an ASC event so close to home, saying, “Our office is based in Legian so Padma is our local beach. Padma is the most famous beach break wave in Bali and Quiksilver support many of the local Legian rippers including Tipi Jabrik, Rio and Ryuki Waida, Made “Bleronk” Darmayasa, Sandi Selamet, and his brother Andre Julian. We thought it would be a good opportunity to put on an ASC sanctioned event during our Bali Big Eco Weekend to highlight the environmental challenges Bali faces, whilst giving an opportunity to the local rippers to show the world what they have.”
ASC Surfer Representative Mega Semadhi was stoked to hear the news and is ready to pull on his contest jersey. “I can’t wait to get back into the water for a comp, as there haven’t been any ASC contests in Bali yet this year,” said Mega. “Thanks to Quiksilver for putting on this event, and I’m really looking forward to getting out there with the boys to compete, and I know the girls feel the same way,” he added.
There will be an opening and briefing party for the two Quiksilver surfing events at the Boardriders Café on Jalan Legian on Friday night June 20th, which will include food drinks, fun, and last chance registration for the Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge. Expect to see and meet all of the Quiksilver and Roxy legends and team riders too, so don’t miss it!
