10 June 2014, Kuta-Bali: Quiksilver, in conjunction with the Uluwatu Boardriders Club, today announced the 2nd annual Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge on Sunday 22 June where 32 participants can surf against local Balinese pros and surfing legends from the Quiksilver and Roxy teams to raise money for environmental and beach clean-up programs in Bali.
For a Rp. 2 million (about $180 USD) entry fee, the lucky 32 surfers will paddle out and compete with Quiksilver legends Mark Richards, Matt Hoy, Jake Paterson, free surfer Craig Anderson, current world number two ranked Sally Fitzgibbons, Kelia Moniz, Bruna Schmitz, and Rosy Hodge from the Roxy team. In addition, local Bali legends include Made Kasim, Ketut Menda, Made Switra and Made Lana, as well as Tipi Jabrik, Dede Suryana and others from the local Quiksilver team for a total of 54 participants.
This year’s Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge will be in the Eddie Aikau six-person heat format, where each surfer competes in two heats and the two highest scores from their four best waves will be scored and totaled. The surfer with the highest two-wave score total (out of a possible 20 points, maximum of 10 points per wave) will be declared the winner of the event.
After the competition the Single Fin bar will open up for a sunset party and host the awards presentation in what is sure to be reminiscent of Uluwatu surf scenes from “Morning of the Earth”, the Albe Falzon epic from the 70s that stirred the imaginations of millions.
“Uluwatu is the best wave in Bali, and to be able to surf with the locals and regular punters who are all collectively trying to highlight environmental awareness in Bali is something I am thrilled to be a part of,” says Matt Hoy.
Sally Fitzgibbons agrees, saying “I love Bali, so I’m really happy to be able to help spread the environmental message here towards keeping the beaches and water clean. I was here a couple of years ago and had such a good time, so it’s great to be coming back!”
Craig Anderson added, “I travel all over the world and still rate Indo as my favorite…looking forward to getting on to some long lefts at Ulus!”
Quiksilver spokesperson Sammy Gosling is looking forward to another great Uluwatu Challenge this year, saying, “This is the second year of this event, which is to highlight the environmental issues at Uluwatu and around Bali. We’re so glad to bring our global team together with local legends and tourists to make a positive difference. Last year we had the smallest swell possible at Ulu and everyone still had a great day so we are hoping for a thumping swell to hit Outside Corner in 2014. It will be a great day for both the surfers and the fans on the beach.”

Successful applicants will be notified and expected to attend the opening party at the Boardriders Café on Jalan Legian in Kuta starting at 7:00pm on June 20, where they will pay their entry fee and view the heat draws.
The Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge is presented by Quiksilver, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia, Boardriders Café, Single Fin, Jim Beam, and San Miguel, with support by the Uluwatu Boardriders Club and the Asian Surfing Championships.
