BALI
2nd -3rd January 2014
Hi surfers and thanks again for stopping by the baliwaves (keeping you in the loop with Bali since 1999) for the latest news and best views on surfing and weather conditions from right here on the only sane choice for your next tropical surfing holiday, Bali.
Ok well as I’ve been telling ya’s via Twitter the weather has been pretty rough the last few days and the waves nothing really to rave about. But yesterday we were expecting a nice little spike in wave height so between we headed out trying to dodge the rain clouds and see what was happening surf wise.
Our first stop was for a birds eye view on Geger Beach at Nusa Dua and as expected there were some solid 3-4ft waves breaking along the reef with around 40+ surfers scattered through it. Surfing conditions were clean and tidy with a strong Westerly wind blowing straight off shore. But the waves were breaking too fast and mostly closing out.
From there we shot across the Toll Road and made our way to Serangan. As it shows in today’s photo gallery Serangan was breaking nicely with plenty of left and rights on offer in the 3-4ft class. Wind direction was hitting the waves at Serangan straight off shore. There was also no shortage of surfers over there with around 120 odd surfers plastered through the line up.
Weather wise it was raining through most of the day with brief patches of sunshine thrown in. Temperature wise the midday high would have been 28 degree’s Celsius.
Today the 4th and our 6.45AM surf check on the Outer Reefs here in Tuban was showing blown out 1-2ft waves breaking between Kuta reef and Airport left with the wind blowing hard out of the West.
I also took another run back over to Serangan to find wave height to have backed off in the 2-3ft range. Surfing conditions were clean but with that strong off shore W-WSW wind hitting gusts up to 14knot. Today also had to be a record crowd in attendance and just about every surf school in Bali also on the scene.
Ketut has called in from Keramas where he is at the moment calling in wave height at 2-4ft with a strong off shore blowing into the waves. But for some reason or another the waves were not lining up properly and mostly closing out. Crowd wise there it was also off the scale with 40+ surfers crammed into the small take off zone..
Weather wise today we still have the strong Westerly wind happening but it’s been a mainly hot and sunny day so far (11.15AM). Currently outside we have 30 degree’s Celsius and the wind still coming out of the West at 10 – 14knot.
The next tide today is Bali will be a 0.6mtr Low at 3.30PM.
Changing dollars to Rupiah on the streets of Bali, — US$=Rp12,375 –1AU$=Rp9,975 —
Today’s Travel Tip, Cash money in 50’s or 100’s are always going to get you the best rate here in Bali. Beware using the ATM’s as your going to get the lowest exchange rates possible. Yesterday while the Aussie dollar was getting Rp10,050 on the streets of Bali I used my Aussie banks (Commonwealth Bank) ATM and pulled out Rp5,000,000. which on the street would have exchanged for LESS than AU$500.00 but on my statement it ended up costing me AU$528.00 at this banks exchange rate. Cash Rules !!!
Holiday Traffic is also finally starting to settle down thank God, well at least here in Tuban. I also had a pretty good run home from Serangan earlier, now that the Christmas New Years domestic vacationers have mostly returned to the big island of Java.
