BALI / INDONESIA
28th – 29th January 2016
Hi folks and welcome back to the baliwaves (keeping you in the loop with Bali since back in 1999) for our latest news and the best possible views on surfing and weather conditions from right here on the only sane choice for your next tropical surfing holiday, Bali.
Ok well first up here’s a surf report and a hand full of images sent through to us from our friends up at the Kandui Surf Resort in the Mentawai Island chain of Sumatra.
The Kandui Surf Resort, Mentawai Islands
27th January 2016
We’ve started our second trip for 2016, and it’s been just a smaller version of the fun trip we had last week. Looks like a couple little swells on the horizon for this trip with some favourable winds for the swell magnets. Should be a good trip.
Today the 28th here in Bali and we set off this morning almost certain.. that we would be still able to find a wave or two over on the East Coast up in the Gianyar area. Especially after our first surf check at Serangan was showing 2-3 foot waves with the occasional bigger over head set wave with clean and glassy conditions. The only thing that stopped us from going out there for a paddle was the hideous amount of surf schools pulling up, and I do mean more than I’ve ever seen. The funny thing is that these new *surfers* seem to have their heads up their arses, no sign of a friendly hello or even a nod of their heads, what gives, The first thing they should be taught is that seeing as though they are still kooks they should be friendly and respectful to actual surfers, right ? Even as we were driving out through the pot hole riddled dirt road there was a steady stream of cars and vans with 4-6 soft tops on the roof of each one
But we laughed it off and headed further up the coast to “Secrets” to find 3 surfers in the water but wave height was only showing in the 1-2ft range and the wind already turning cross shore.
So back in the car and bee line for Keramas to see if she was picking up any swell. Keramas wasn’t, wave height there was also only in the 1-2ft range and the wind cross onshore, there were also maybe 24 surfers in the water while we were there, a couple of hours before the top of the tide.
It was a unanimous vote to back track to Secrets and hopefully the extra tide had improved it, cause by this time we were desperate. But no luck today, the higher end of the tide had killed off what little swell there was getting into Secrets.
Weather wise it’s been a lot better than the last few that’s for sure, no rain has crossed our path today. Although it was mostly overcast it was still hot and humid here on the holiday island.
In summary who can complain about the last few days of small waves that we have had to endure here in Bali, especially after such a fantastic start to the year with perfect weather and surfing conditions for the majority of January. And you know things are only going to be getting better and better.
