BALI / INDONESIA
7th – 8th June 2016
Hello everyone and thanks for stopping by the baliwaves (keeping you in touch with Bali since back in 1999) for our latest news and the best possible views on surfing and weather conditions from right here on your favorite tropical surfing holiday destination, Bali.
Ok so here’s a whole bunch of photos from where we were at Canggu yesterday. As it shows in the photos wave height was in the 3-4ft class with some occasional bigger freak sets. By far the right hand wave on the river mouth had the best ones breaking. Echo and the Sandbar were pretty back wash effected through the high tide while the wind was light ans variable. But as one would expect perfect waves always equates to big crowds.
Today the 8th and our 6.30AM surf check on the Outer Reefs was showing some swell out there with 3-5 footers breaking between Kuta Reef and Airport Left as the tide was nearing the bottom of the low. There were even a few waves breaking out on Karang Tengah, so there had to be waves at J-Point, didn’t there ?
Now the charts have been screaming at me since last week that a new swell would be smashing into Bali today. Most predictors were also calling for a more SSW direction in the swell. That would have put more size on the East Coast in my book. So we set off up the East Coast to one of my old favorite locations at Kerangasem. We knew the tide was still coming in and were prepared to hang out and wait for the waves to start peeling through.. But that didn’t happen, when we pulled up the ocean was more like a giant lake. But still we waited and waited and by high tide when it’s normally on it was barely 1-2ft and breaking right onto the newly built rock retaining wall..
I don’t know who or why this new pathway / retaining wall was built as the pathway just comes to an abrupt halt around the back of the point and every wave instead of rolling through now runs into this new wall and sends a horrific back / cross wash straight into the on coming waves. To me it looks like another Bali surfing location massacre, I do hope I am wrong.
Weather wise it was another beauty here in Bali with nothing but blue sky over us.
I’ve gotta call time out tomorrow as we have a relative getting married tomorrow back up in our little village at Kerangasem. So keep an eye on our Twitter and Instagram feeds through out the day to see how it goes.
This Thursday night, it’s on again. Surf Happenings by Channel Islands Surfboards Bali. Come on down for a fun night of board talk, BBQ, beers, lucky door prize, cool clips and good vibes.

Hey Slim,
Got any pics of the King tides around Bali? Just saw a few from Lembongan, Berawa and Ketewek getting smashed
Slim says
Hi Wade, no not really bro. But we have “king tides” every full and new moon here in Bali. You will find that the biggest tidal differences happen 2 to 3 days after the moon phase. This last case of “king tides” just happened to coincide with a rather large swell. Nb: We don’t always get big swells with the Full or New Moons.
Nothing unusual happened in our neck of the woods Wade
