BALI / INDONESIA
10th – 11th August 2018
Hello folks and thanks for dropping into the baliwaves (surfing through the seasons since back in 1999) for our Sunday Session and our latest news and best possible views. From right here on the No.1 tropical surfing holiday destination and gateway to Indonesia’s surfing paradise, Bali.
On the 10th we made our way back down to the bukit to Indonesia’s premier surfing location of Uluwatu. We knew there wasn’t going to be much swell happening around the island so Uluwatu is always an easy go to. Actually the first dozen or so photos in this latest photo gallery were from Ulu on the 10th. Wave height at Uluwatu was at best waist to head high with maybe a slightly over head freak set or two. With the small waves also comes the learners so it was pretty much on for young and old with all ages push in divisions. Wind wise it was also a bit funky through the morning with NW to W then around to SSW then SSE while we were down there. We thought we would bail out and head home before the afternoon traffic jam, leaving at 12.30PM we still got caught anyway. Sort of becoming the norm down coming in and out of the bukit these days.
Yesterday the 11th (Happy Birthday Made Amanda !!!) and with the wind up early out of the SE we thought we’d take a chance and head over to Keramas and just maybe luck into some un crowded waves. Arriving to find the wind already fresh out of the East. But with the stormy weather around I thought we might have a chance of catching a glass off. Not to be and my crew didn’t want to wait around and see. I did hear later on that the wind did glass off an hour or so later. There was only 1 surfers in the water when we were there.
So from there and as the bulk of our photo gallery shows we settled for some nice fun sized beach breaks up along the Legian stretch. Wave height was in the waist to head high with a few bigger freak sets. It was also good to catch up with a lot of friendly faces that frequent the stretch.
Weather wise it was mostly hot and sunny.
Today the 12th and this mornings 6.45AM surf check on the Outer reefs of Tuban was showing 1-3ft waves breaking between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. Surfing conditions were clean with a fresh off shore ESE – SE Tradewind. The tide was still running in and Middle Reef was looking the best option for a paddle.
Weather wise today it started off light over cast but with the strong ESE-SE Tradey blowing it quickly cleared up for a mostly fine and sunny. Right now at 5.35PM there’s a full blue sky that should make an excellent sun set here along the West Coast and the tide has also just come off the bottom of a very dry and reef exposing Low tide.

I saw a chinese guy at low tide ulu, on dry reef, standing on a soft top with booties on, a mask and snorkel as well while his mates took his picture. A few days later i saw a group of chinese on soft tops in the line up at balangan. I saw a jetty at nusa dua, i saw excavators at canggu river mouth , i think that foiling is the least of your worries!! get over it, you have nothing to worry about, just avoid the beginners.
Slim says
Yeah but I’m not going to get cut in half by a beginner on a soft top wearing a fkg snorkel, a foiler…. big chance to dangerous for Bali I say no foiling lets keep it to surfing like it’s supposed to be.
Slim says
Hi Dale, if you read the caption on the “foiler” photo you will see that most people in Bali do not approve of them or SUP’s for that matter as they are both to dangerous in the wrong hands of learners. I often post a photo of a sup going over the falls or taking a bad wipe out.
