BALI / INDONESIA
17th – 18th October 2018
Hi surfers and welcome back to the baliwaves (trying to avoid sleepy truck drivers since back in 1999) for our latest news and best possible views. From right here on the No.1 tropical surfing holiday destination and gateway to Indonesia’s surfing paradise, Bali.
Ok speaking of trying to avoid sleepy truck drivers, well after 24yrs of negotiating Bali traffic conditions on both sides of the island, we got smacked by a truck driver that admitted he fell asleep at the wheel. We were on our way to the waves and only 5 mins from turning off the twin lane highway when the traffic lights turned red up in front of us. So with 40mtrs to spare and only doing maybe 45kmh it was an easy down gear and brakes. Two cars were already stopped up ahead and we were back in 2nd gear and getting ready to stop, still doing 15kmh, BANG. An atom bomb goes off in our ears and our car is thrown almost 10mtrs forward from the impact of a runaway truck and sleeping driver.
The bottom line was the rear end of our car was totaled but everyone inside was ok, just shaken. The boards on the roof were fine. Things could have been a lot worse we were very lucky that our car was still rolling and not already stopped, the truck must have still been doing 60 when he slammed into us. Lucky it was us that got hit and not a parent taking their kids to school on a motor bike.. So it was a long morning with no waves, I could see the ocean we were that close. The trucking company boss and the driver were extremely apologetic and are taking care of the damage to our car.
So like I always say about riding motor bikes in Bali, it doesn’t really matter how good a rider you are or how long you have been riding. It’s the other people on the road that you have to watch out for. We didn’t even see this guy coming yesterday, no warning of brakes screaming, nothing, just sudden impact.
Alright then lets get on with it hey and back in the saddle again. Our current photo gallery was shot on the 17th over on the East Coast just down the road from the always popular surfing location of Keramas. As it shows wave height was a nice size in the head to almost double head high range. At first conditions were super clean and glassy before the wind started to swing to the Southern quadrant. But even so the waves just started to peel off even better and were still clean and tidy. There were around 15 other surfers in the water but all in all it was a friendly bunch of surfers. The funny thing was though even though it was pushing double head high there was one surfer being pushed into waves, heh heh.
Weather wise there was some early morning cloud then nothing but blue sky and sun shine from midday onwards.
Yesterday the 18th …..
Today the 19th and there’s nothing but blue sky here in Tuban. Our 7.15AM surf check on the Outer reefs of Tuban had 2-4ft waves breaking between Kuta Reef and Airport left. The tide was still up at the time so there were waves up to head high on KR and AL, Middle’s will improve as the tide falls out. Wind direction down the beach was almost straight West and on shore but still light.
Ketut has gone for a run over to Keramas with the camera equipment so I should have an up date for you soon, stay tuned to our Twitter feed (@baliwaves) for more news and information shortly
The next tide today in Bali will be a 0.8mtr Low at 12.51PM
Tomorrow’s forecast is showing similar size waves and wind as today with maybe a little more size showing on the East Coast.
Have a nice Friday folks and stay tuned cause we will be surfing through the weekend here at the baliwaves.
Don’t forget our friends at Joyo’s G-Land Surf Camp are offering some nice fat discounts for any surfers wanting to head in for the late season un crowded special. Just contact us first here at baliwaves and we’ll deliver the goods.
