BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
20th – 21st April 2020
Hello surfers (KEEP READING BELOW FOR LATEST UP DATE) and lovers of Bali and thanks again for stopping by the baliwaves (Bringing you all the good things from Bali since back in 1999) for our latest news and best possible views on surfing and weather conditions here on the island of the Gods, and the No.1 tropical surfing holiday destination and gateway to Indonesia’s surfing paradise, Bali.
Ok well I had to take a break off the lap top the last couple of days and wind down a little bit and just do some soothing stuff around home for a change. But the baliwaves.com has been my life for over 21 years now so it’s hard to stay away for too long.
I’ve had another dig through the archives and decided on taking a trip back to Bali in 2005 at the our most spectacular surfing location in Indonesia, namely Padang Padang. No place comes close to what Padang Padang does. For starters unless we have a massive SW Swell hitting Bali it just lays dormant. When waves like Uluwatu’s Outside Corner is pushing wave height to the max at 12-20ft that’s when Padang Padang comes alive. It can be surfed in the 4-5ft class but the barrels usually pinch shut putting a flaw on the wave. But when it starts to hit the double to triple head high plus that’s when the roundest barrels in Indo are on offer.
I haven’t surfed Padang Padang for almost 20yrs same as Outside Corner which was usually my favorite due to more size and less surfers in the line up. These days if Padang Padang is breaking you need to be a well know Pro or “one of the boys” to get a good one to yourself. I still have my old 8’1″ Dennis Pang and 8’6″ Billy Hamilton Outside Corner guns in my “old boards” rack here at home. This gallery has a few Bali and International Legends in it please comment if you recognize anyone or if your part of it.
Yesterday the 20th I geared up in mr PPE and made a trip (400mtrs) down to my local beach, close by Kuta Reef etc. Normally I’m down there everyday, but due to isolating and trying to avoid contact with the least amount of humans as possible it had been over a month since my last visit. I actually had a valid reason to be there. As a traditional boat owner for the last 20yrs or more I need to check my boat and make sure it’s not full of water and a breeding ground for mosquitoes. With all our night time rain we have had the last week my boat was in fact full of water, around a 1000ltrs it seemed after bailing it out.
Pantai Jerman has been officially closed to tourists and the main entrance is blocked off with a barricade. But you wouldn’t believe it.. as I was parking my bike near the barricade I watched a young European couple nonchalantly climb over it with their surfboards in hand. Why is it that 99% of the tourists complaining about the Governments decision to close the beaches are Europeans. Through their actions and non compliance it is only going to make authorities crack down harder for everyone. BTW the surf was 1ft and the wind on shore out of the West, kooks just gotta be kooks.
Today the 21st and it’s been a pretty good day so far that I can see. Mostly blue sky with a little early morning cloud. Right now at 1.55pm the temperature is on 31 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is also brutal at 83%. Wind direction earlier was light out of the WNW but now is a strong ESE Tradewind.
Swell Forecast, I’ve thrown a few images from Stormsurfs website into the gallery and the next 7 days are looking like it’s going to absolutely start pumping later this afternoon or tomorrow. Three continuous swells coming in on the back of the first. Further out there’s more sign of swell pushing under South Africa in transit.
I have heard that the local Government has extended all beaches to be closed through until the end of May, due to social distancing from the Corona Virus. There is a notice over at Keramas beach from the Police saying failure to comply can result in being jailed for up 1 year.
Things are getting tough here in Bali with most people that work in tourism not working and small businesses closed. Our Family guest house has also been empty since early January. I’m very lucky and very grateful that a friend has given my family a chance to catch our breath with a cash donation. Fortunately for the Balinese they receive food packages from their local Banjar. But that’s food only and basic at that. There’s no financial assistance to help pay rents or utility bills etc etc. Likewise with Bali’s Muslim community getting some assistance from each local community Mosque. It’s times like these we all need to pull together and try and help each other.
So this has brought me to decide on running a Gofundme page through baliwaves that will hopefully get us some cash flow that we can help others that are in similar situations as we are. Hopefully we will be able to help our local Kuta Reef to Airport Left community and others that I know are suffering, my family included. So if anyone can spare anything at all even 20 cents it will be a big help and make a difference to some Balinese in this past of the island. On a separate note I’m happy to trade some open date accommodation with us in exchange for pre payment. I do know everyone is doing it tough World wide, but here in Bali some of us have no financial aid or support what so ever.
Thanks again friends for your continued support of the original Bali surf report website.
