BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
23rd January 2021
Hello Bali people and thanks for tuning into the baliwaves, the original Bali surf report website since back in 1999.
For now we can do is try to avoid crowds, wear our masks and wash our hands. We really thank each and everyone of you have helped Bali in one way or another and I’m sure Bali will not forget you. You really are Bali people. That goes to all our friends that have helped my family through 2020, the people that really know us and our situation. I don’t where we would be without your kindness, I just hope we can see this out a little longer, if you could spare a dollar we will be forever grateful.
On the surf front here in Bali, well especially here on the West Coast, has been mostly small with on or cross shore wind. We have had couple of early morning off shores over on the East Coast but definitely lacking in swell. But with the weather the way it has been it’s not been camera friendly at all. Pretty much non stop rain as I’ve been saying, seems like an eternity now, This has to be one of the wettest Dec and Jan I’ve ever seen and there is a lot more rain forecasted to fall on us yet.
So saying that I’ve been forced to dig back through some archived hard disks to come up with some much more attractive and soothing photos for today’s photo gallery. Most of thee photos were shot on the East Coast at well know locations like Krupuk point and Cupang point. There are also a few photos in there from Zombie land and points further West. Most of you seasoned Bali veterans should be able to recognise most spots. The way time flys lately it won’t be long and we will be back enjoying these waves again. I just hope that you guys will be here to join in the fun.
This morning the 23rd and wave height here South of Kuta on the Outer Reefs we have a dreary 1ft with a fresh and gusty W-WSW wind making it look even less desirable. I honestly don’t think the East Coast would be providing any relief either but there might be a few smallies at Nusa Dua to Green Balls for those with nothing better to do. There is a small bump forecasted for tomorrow but I don’t it’s going to make much of a difference with more of this wind predicted to go with it. Looking further out we do have a decent moderate swell in transit to Indonesia that should hit our reefs on the 30th into the 31st. Early February looks like it might be a bit of a game changer, fingers crossed.
Weather wise out side we had more over night rain in our area and probably most of Bali for that matter. We did get a brief reprieve through until 9.30 when it re commenced to fall. Now at 2.00pm the ground is still wet and the sky still overcast but at least it’s not raining. Temperature wise the mercury is a cool 26 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 93%. The wind is a fresh W-WSW with gusts up to 17knot+
On the Bali Corona Virus scene, the only thing that has actually changed is that the last couple of days Bali had record number of new positive cases and almost reaching 500 new positives in 1 day. Yesterday saw 212 new cases in Bali and Nationally there were 13,632 for all Indonesia. In my eyes it does look like a lot of Indonesians here in Bali seem to have forgotten how bad this pandemic is. Compared to the early days of empty streets and everyone (except the chosen ones in the Canggu area) strictly following the protocols. What I’m seeing now is lot more locals not wearing masks and not watching their distance to others.
Some good news for us aging ex pats is that the President of Indonesia is going to let certain agencies obtain and sell us the vaccine. Even better is that we won’t be allowed the Chinese made Sinovac vaccine as that will be rolled out free to Indonesians. The Sinovac vaccine was not tested with elderly and is not recommended to anyone in the “danger groups” (diabetes, asthma etc). Where as other vaccines have been and passed the phase 3 trials.
Indonesia has also extended the closure of her International airports to all foreigners until the 8th February. With the exception of certain visas like KITAS and KITAP. The extension looks like it may keep dragging out as long as the number of positive cases keep growing. The Indonesian Government is starting to get very serious containing the spread of the virus and is also starting to take a more stronger approach on those that are not following protocol and endangering the general public. I personally don’t know why people would want to travel anywhere through a deadly pandemic. Especially those from countries that have been decimated from this virus, risking bringing it here to Bali.
