BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
18th Jan – March 2013
Hello Bali people and thanks for tuning into the baliwaves, the original Bali surf report website since back in 1999. We really hope your 2021 is already an improvement on last year and that our situation can only improve through the year. Here in Bali our situation has only declined while the graphics for the virus casualties only keeps pointing up wards and apparently out of control. It does seem that our chances of seeing tourism return to Bali all hangs on the outcome of the vaccination program that will slowly start to get under way in the next week or so. But in reality will take many more months of suffering before we see any results.
This also doesn’t mean us little folk will be first in line and it looks like we will be several more months away before we can breathe (pardon the pun) a little easier after inoculations. All we can do in the mean time.. is try to avoid crowds, wear our masks and wash our hands. We really thank each and everyone of you have helped Bali in one way or another and I’m sure Bali will not forget you. You really are Bali people. That goes to all our friends that have helped my family through 2020, the people that really know us and our situation, you have got this far. I don’t where we would be without your kindness, I just hope we can see this out a little longer, if you can spare a dollar we will be forever grateful.
The last few days here on the South side of Kuta it’s been pretty quite on the surf scene with only some waist to head high waves breaking out on the Outer Reefs between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. I have had some news from the East Coast with some better size and surfing conditions between Nusa Dua and Keramas. I’ve also had a few heads up from friends who have been surfing at one of my wet season favorites Serangan, But that location at the moment is for those who can afford the 10 dollar boat ride or have friends with boats.
Today the 18th and wave height on the Outers is still only just in the 1-2ft class at best with light and variable on shore wind.
My foot still hasn’t fully healed from the infection I’ve been fighting since the 1st of this month but very close and good enough to get out and shoot some photos. Well that has been my plans for the last few days. Unfortunately the weather has been crap, rain and photography does not got well together.
Weather wise, well as I mentioned it’s been wet wet wet here in Bali with pretty much constant rain and overcast sky since long before Christmas 2020. We have been lucky to see the sun out a couple of times but that only pushes the humidity level up through the roof. Right now at 12.55pm the rain has let up but the sky is still heavily overcast. Temperature wise the mercury is on 29 degree’s Celsius, Humidity is at 79%. The wind was WNW earlier but now is more straight West but still only light around the 2-5knot mark.
Today’s photo gallery takes us back to more blue sky and all day off shore wind at Kuta Reef. The majority of these shots were taken through the month of March and a good early start change of seasons. I sure do hope it happens again in 2021. (Not just for the waves but so we can also get our fishing boats back in the water and bring home fresh food for our families and friends) Kuta Reef has always been my No.1 fav wave as it can be such a long and perfect left hander. Secondly as I’ve always lived within walking distance to it.
Back in my early days of living here 25 yrs ago, well I had no money back then either but was young and single which made things a lot easier. So pretty much just because we could my local surfing mates and I would paddle out and back to Kuta Reef twice a day, or bum a lift if there was room in a reef taxi. Back then there was only a handful of boats along the shoreline, unlike today there is probably around 100 boast between Airports and Kuta. Actually my last surf at Middle Reef late last year I took a boat out there but paddled back to shore for a bit of extra exercise.
I’ve seen a lot of changes along the shoreline. Especially on the local warung scene here in Tuban. We had some great places to eat and hang out at over the years. Some were bulldozed for the land grab from hotel and villa developers. Most have been lost, but we are still lucky and still have a few local flavor Balinese classic warungs left on the beach style warungs in our area. I also think that’s what the majority of real surfers would prefer to see other than an over developed shore line.
There has been quite a few stand out surfers at Kuta Reef over the same time from Made Kasim and Ketut Menda, Wayan Neka, Gede “Ondel” Miasa just too mention a few right through to our undoubtedly current king of Kuta Reef “Sima”. “Ta-rif” as we we call it you would know if you have ever surfed it, it is long and perfect and very un forgiving if the tide is too low, too fat if too high.
Ta-Rif due to it’s location just South of main stream Kuta tucked away in Tuban attracts all types of surfers, from pros and average Joe’s to surf schools who’s students have trouble getting to their feet on 9ft soft tops. Yes sir, all kinds and all types of surf vehicle from sups, goat boats, lidders, long boarders and mini mals. But hey I guess it takes all kinds of people to make the World go round
Tomorrow’s Bali surf forecast is saying that we will see wave height continue to drop off and a more fresh W-WSW wind. Early morning tide is low. Further out we can hope to see a noticeable bump in wave height on the 24th into the 25th.
Bali Corona Virus situation, it is now only getting worse with constant high numbers of new positive cases, Indonesia has had days last week with new cases exceeding 14K on some days. Here in Bali I think it’s almost time that more stronger restrictions need to be put in place. I think most of us living here knew that the annual Christmas / New Year domestic tourist influx was going to spark a virus wildfire here, and it has. The safest place at the moment is to stay home, with all the rain we are having there seems to be a lot of people with the flu. I read that some Covid hospitals are already full or reaching max capacity all too quickly in many parts of Indo and even up the coast in the Jembrana area as well. Pray for Bali.
