Hello everyone and welcome back to your baliwaves. Today we have a reality check post for you on just how it really is in the Tuban to Legian area of Bali. Normally, pre Covid-19 it was known as the heart of Bali for tourism. The first thing that came to mind with any mention of Bali.
Yesterday the 13th I took a ride up to Kuta around 2.30pm. My route was, traveling to Kuta via Jalan Kartika Plaza. Entering the “Kuta Square” then riding past the “Hard Rock Cafe” continuing along Jalan Pantai Kuta before turning into the once hustling, bustling & thriving Poppies Lane 2. Then turning into the main street of Kuta (Jalan Legian) and back into Poppies Lane 1. Then back along Jalan Pantai Kuta to Jalan Benasari and then heading back home to Tuban pretty much via the same route. These 3 Lanes were the hub of Kuta and every day and night always filled full of laughter and happy holiday makers. It is hard to recognize any of the landmarks of these Bali iconic locations, except for the obvious.
I hadn’t been up to Kuta for maybe 6 months as it’s been hard enough to try and keep normality together for my family as it is. No changes since my last visit. Kuta is still a ghost town and a fading shadow of it’s former self. There were some shops open with staff waiting for customers to come and barter “for a better price” but there were no customers to be seen. It was more of a ritual of hope that these people go through, I think.
It has been well over 18 months since the last real holiday tourists were here in Bali. But I was very proud to see that even these empty streets and lanes were almost spotlessly clean, in true Balinese pride and fashion. It is going to take a long time to get Kuta revived but the wheels are at least now in motion.
Today the 14th and in fact marks the point of opening progress, or the first step in seeing a return of holiday revellers to Bali. Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International airport is opening for business today. Fully equipped to handle visitors with PCR tests, check vaccination proof and keep everyone happy and safe etc etc. Yes, the opening of the airport is our first step. Now all we need are planes with people on them to land, that will be the next step.
Quarantine is also going to be reduced to 5 days but will also be strictly supervised to ensure everyone’s safety and follow protocols. The full rules of entry are not 100% clear at this early stage and will always be able to be changed and adapt, I’m sure. So far there are 18 or 19 invited for entry into Bali. There have also been some changes to the Visa that will be issued. It is all happening very fast but it is a step that Bali and her people need to get the local economy growing again

Just for the record and habit. Yesterday’s check on surfing conditions here in the Kuta area was only showing small to micro waves. Between Kuta Reef and Airport Left wave height was in fact only in the knee to waist high with a very rare slightly bigger shoulder high set wave. Surfing conditions were clean but with a light cross / on shore wind early before the SE-SSE direction change late afternoon. With the changing of seasons, we are experiencing at the moment the off shore ESE wind turns up later and later each week until it signs off till next dry season.
Weather wise there has been some cloud drifting through but you know this close to the Equator the temperature is always going to be warm to hot with plenty of humidity thrown in.
Tomorrow we are expecting a bump is wave height and hopefully some clean early morning conditions to go with it. We will have to wait to actually find out what the wind decides on though.
