Hello folks well we were waiting for the swell to hit and bam right on time it was hitting Bali like a head on with a freight train. I was um and ar’n the last few days to go out and shoot 1-3 footers but decided that the majority of you guys wouldn’t be that fussed over sub standard baliwaves. So I’ve been crossing off things that should have been done off the list here at home instead.
But anyway, we choose to head down to Uluwatu where we knew it would be huge, and it was. Arriving at 8.30am to a grey overcast sky and a strong off shore wind out of the ESE. I was also surprised and happy to see that there were at least 20 surfers in the water having a go. The hard core lads on the 8 footers were sitting out off the Bombie and paddling into some real bombs. Then there was another split crew riding off to the side of the Peak. The best and most spectacular surfing was happening out on the Bombie a long way out from the cave. As it shows in the photos I snapped with the mighty 1000mm lens that usually gets in close and tight, but, not when it’s breaking that far out.
The tide was still running in for a solid 2.5mtr High while we were on the scene and with that much water moving I can just imagine how much fun it would have been getting in and out through “the Cave” In the first hour Ketut and I were at Ulu we saw some mother sets clean everyone up and 2 broken boards then washed through. In fact we saw 5 broken boards come through and some brave comradery as fellow surfers helped each other out. Everyone made it back in to shore, and another reason why not to take on big surf unless you are extremely fit and feel comfortable in the water without a board.
I’ve loaded a couple of 1 wave video clips onto our baliwaves Facebook page if your interested. I haven’t heard many reports from other locations here in Bali. Except, my afternoon surf check on the Outer reefs was still showing solid waves mostly washing out all sections from Airport left to Kuta Reef. I also had Ketut take a run down to Padang Padang with the video cam for the afternoon dry Low tide. I haven’t checked that footage yet but Ketut said it was in the 5-6ft range with almost 100 surfers in the water. I can’t wait to see the footage of that.
Weather wise yesterday the 16th it was pretty ordinary and mostly a dull over cast sky with a 10-15knot+ off shore ESE wind.
I’ve also received a handful of photos from our friends at Joyo’s G-Land Surf Camp that look pretty sweet and a very tidy and a well groomed 5-6ft. I’ll get them up on line some time today or first thing in the morning.
This morning the 17th and our 7.30am surf check on the Outer Reefs was showing wave height to have started to back off with 3-5 foot waves breaking between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. The wind was still only in the 5-8knot range at the time but I would imagine it gaining more momentum through out the day.
Weather wise outside it’s another mostly grey and overcast day and there has been a few drops of rain here in South Kuta.
The next tide today will be a 2.4mtr High at 12.10pm
Tomorrows Surf forecast has the wave models predicting we will see wave height continuing on the down sizing trend with more fresh and gusty off shore (west coast) ESE wind.
Tourism up date. Ok well it has really been surreal in a way to see such a big rush of tourism back into Bali again. Especially after only 6 months ago we were in dire straights and depression. The last month it has been fully amplified by the national school holidays through out Indonesia. Which really put a huge amount of pressure on Bali’s roads causing traffic jams with all the visiting domestic tourists into Bali. I have been doing quite a few miles around Bali and it is so soothing to see an also big increase in westerners.
The beaches around Kuta have been crowded with locals and westerners sprinkled through. But while the roads in Kuta and Legian have a lot of traffic in cars and bikes there are still very few foot pedestrians. About 80% of the businesses are open and 20% still have their roller doors down and “for rent” signs up. I feel that the Kuta area and directly to the North and South still have a long way to go for a “back in the black” economy.
Now on the 17th the kids are heading back to school tomorrow and the roads are much easier to navigate again. With the exceptions maybe in the Canggu area and also on the Southern bukit end of the island the traffic is still jammed by midday.
So book your tickets, Bali is still waiting for you and your friends to come and pitch in.
