My family and I really want to thank everyone who has helped us get through the pandemic and total lack of income. I’m so happy to see the speed at which Bali is coming back into swing again. Please don’t give up on us through this as hopefully we are on the last leg. We are slowly getting back on track but there has been lots of expenses and payback loans so If you could spare a dollar or two (every dollar makes a difference) then hit this link https://www.baliwaves.com/2020/08/baliwaves-needs-your-support/
Please don’t hesitate to drop us an email for any surfing accommodation info and we’ll do our best to help out.
Hello Bali people and welcome back to Bali’s original surfing website that was specially created with keeping Bali people in touch with Bali back in 1999. I think we have done a pretty good job weathering, earthquakes, tidal waves, terrorist attacks and volcanic eruptions. Let’s hope it’s blue sky and off shore wind for Bali’s future.
As you have undoubtedly already seen in our latest photo gallery more perfect and fun sized waves continue to roll through here on the holiday island. There has even been a couple of hours worth of late afternoon ESE wind before glassing off over the weekend. These photos were taken here along the West Coast at Canggu. Now for any “newbs” wanting to come to Bali lets not get Batu Bolong or Berawa mistaken with the main surf breaks of Canggu. Those places are quite close to The Gu and more easy learner type waves better suited to the hordes of surf schools that frequent there. When the surf is small you will always finds hundreds of learners in the water.
The main breaks of Canggu or Pererenan are not easy surf school type waves and we rarely see “surf guides” bringing their learners here. Firstly the Echo beach Left is a hard hitting reef break that can have the wave suck or dredge out from under you if you are not aware of moon phase and tide level. Then there is the Sandbar section that is predominantly also a left hand break. Even though there is in fact a sand bottom these waves also break hard, fast and hollow with enough power to slam you and your board into the bottom. Then there is the Rivermouth right hander where tempers often flare and I’ve seen plenty of punches being thrown out in the water from hot heads. The wave is a quality wave for around 50 mtrs before hitting the close out section and there are a lot of rocks scattered in with sand along the ocean floor. There also another left to the NW of the river mouth that also breaks over a mostly rock bottom ledge.
So the Canggu area does cater to a broad range of surfers, but not the big wave surfers. As a rule of thumb when the waves get in the magic double head high class this whole area tends to be at the “max out” range with lots of water moving and unforgiving surf. But at 2-4ft can provide some very good waves. Canggu these days is also the destination of a whole range of non surfers and digital nomads / gypsies looking for night club action and coffee shops. To keep their IG accounts ticking over. It can be a real scene and for us older surfers with a sense of humor, a nice place to visit for a few laughs along with a few waves. Nb extremely bad traffic in this area from midday onwards.
Today the 7th (I must remember to pay our electricity bill) and here in South Kuta our 6.30am surf check had 1-2ft waves breaking between Kuta Reef and Airport left. The tide was just past the middle on the run up and the wind was a light north north wester. So our man Ketut has taken a run over to the East coast of Bali to Keramas. The word is there are chest to slightly over head waves with the NNW wind blowing clean off shore. At the time Ketut said there was 15 surfers in the water.
The next tide today in Bali will be a 2.1mtr High at 9.10am. The next moon phase will be a Full Moon rising on the 8th.
Weather wise outside this morning there is some light and high cloud cover and the temperature now at 8.30am is on 27C and humidity is at 89%. Wind is out of the N-NNW at 1-3knt.
Tomorrows Surf Forecast has the wave models calling for another slight decrease in wave size coming out of the SW with a period of 11 seconds. The wind predicted to be very light and variable through out the morning before dedicating to the S-SSE through the afternoon.
G20 awareness for everyone here in Bali over the next couple off weeks be prepared for traffic diversions and delays with some roads and access closed off. So please allow a little extra time for any travel and I would be avoiding the Nusa Dua area for sure.
Breaking News Department. Petrol has jumped 30% in price from the 4th of September so be prepared for slight increases in all prices on just about everything here in Bali. The first of the increases was LPG, our 12kg refills have gone from Rp135K now at 230K for the same fill. 95% of Indonesia runs on gas for cooking so that’s going to hurt everyone. Everyone that is that’s not using US, Euro, GP or AU dollars that is.
