Yesterday the 21st and our morning surf check on the Outer reefs here in South Kuta was still only showing chest to slightly over head high waves. That was early morning with Middle Reef picking up the bigger set waves while the tide was still on the lower side. We were planning on parking the double outrigger in the channer adjacent to Kuta Reef but it just wasn’t looking right through the optimum side of the tide. KR was also a little clogged with learners as well so it would have been a tad frustrating. By midday and a bit late for West coast surf photography there were some decent sized set waves hitting right across the board from Kuta Reef to Airport left with a fresh and gusty ESE Tradewind blowing.
This morning the 22nd and our surf check on the Outer Reefs was showing as the swell models had predicted a chunky drop in wave height between Kuta reef and Airport Left. So Ketut put his hand up for a trip down to Uluwatu, pretty much our first trip of the season with an off shore wind on it. Ketut arrived just before 8.00am as the wind was just started to puff up out of the ESE and around 50 surfers spread from the top of the Racetrack down to the Main Peak.
Ulu still had a few sneaker set waves cleaning up the un suspecting in the double head high range, with lot’s of surfers* just throwing their boards with a reckless abandon. That’s one of the most dangerous aspects of having learner surfers out on serious reef breaks as these people have no second thoughts on ditching their boards in sheer panic mode. Usually without the brains to check behind them for other surfers that their boards might hit, it is a worry and a real thing. As the tide started to fill in around mid morning the Temple section started to show some form while the crowd on the Main Peak jumped as well. Uluwatu probably had the best waves on the island today.
The next tide this afternoon will be a mean full reef exposing 0.0mtr Low at 5.40pm
Weather wise we have had a real taste of dry season conditions with a fresh ESE-SE wind and a deep blue sky all day. Right now at 3.30pm it’s a warm 30C, humidity is at 68%. While the ESE’r is gusting up to 27km/h.
Tomorrow’s Surf Forecast has the wave models calling a slight drop in wave height from morning through to early afternoon before a slow spike upwards. Wind direction is predicted to be light and variable early before dedicating to the ESE around mid morning.
I don’t know about you but like anything new the WSL’s new ‘cut off” system seems just a bit thin and un supportive to the surfers that make the whole thing work. News just in of the the World’s greatest surfer of all time Mr Kelly Slater has just been eliminated from the Pro Tour and now sent back to be a “qualifier” along with the countless horde of other aspiring pro’s. What’s Kelly going to do, will he re apply for the tour that he has almost single handedly created or will he politely say, “yeah… nah…”
While I’m on the breaking news, I was again shocked that a trusted source has sent me through a serious of photos of a surfboard with a D shaped “bite” mark through the rail along with a surfer in his ripped rash shirt. Fortunately the surfer escaped the teeth by millimeters. You can most likely guess where in Bali that this has happened.
Travel tips. Personal hygiene is a big issue and it’s all on you ! I learn’t this a long long time ago when I started living here in Bali. You really need to understand that everything you touch here in Indonesia could be infected with harmful germs, everything, especially bank notes. So before you eat a single peanut or potato chip make sure you wash your hands with soap or sanitizer. If your with your family enforce these simple rules and you should be fine when it comes to the dreaded “Bali belly” Eating in hotel resto’s your more likely to get crook than eating in a small warung. Simply because the resto’s are not usually (most cases) staffed by owners with staff often worried about wasting food or hygiene. Not always, but that’s where I hear of the most cases of illness coming from. While the small owner operator warungs are too scared to serve bad food and lose their local and international customers. It makes sense to me. Bottom line is WASH YOUR HANDS thorouly before eating any food.
