Yesterday the 16th and we were expecting to see a solid spike in wave height but not quite prepared for what we actually got. Arriving at our primary destination to find wave height in the 6-10ft+ range and looking like no place for old men. We checked it from all angles before deciding that it was far too mice a day to die out there and jumped back in the car. After a quick call to my friends up at Karangasem to see if there was some swell getting in there and getting the thumbs up. So another hour in the car and by the time we arrived the wind had come around to the W-WSW and on shore. But there were a few waves peeling off the point in a much sedat head to a couple of feet over head. But this place has long been a well know go to escape from macking waves. Yesterday there would have been an easy 35 surfers scattered through the point. But most importantly we got wet and got a few waves.
This morning the 17th and the charts were still telling us that we could expect some still beefy sized set waves. We were hoping that conditions had cleaned up with the wind predicted to be a lot more user friendly. Wave height was still an easy 5-7ft+ or double to triple head high plus. As it shows in the first few photos there were some solid waves breaking with a clean off shore wind (East Coast). As the tid hit the top wave height backed off into the double head high class and made it a little bit easier to get out to the line up. But still the crowd only maxed at 10 in total.
It was a bit deceptive and this location has been doing this all week. Dropping off in size as the tide peaks on the top or the bottom and then as soon as the tide turns and starts moving again the big waves start to pour back in again. Getting back into shore was the most dangerous this morning. with the waves having exposed a lot of rocks along the shore line there wasn’t much room to scramble in. With the waves smashing up on the man made rock wall and a strong shore line sweep trying to pull you towards the bare rocks. But with a little coordination everyone made it in in one piece.
Weather wise today it’s been a nice hot and sunny day here in Bali and I’m pretty sure the switch between wet and dry season is going to be flicked over the next day or two. Wind wise this morning it was light and variable but actually swung to the SE around 10.00am. Right now at 3.30pm the temp is a warm 31C, humidity is at 70%. It also feels like the wind is still coming out of the E-ESE at around 10km/h. I’ll be heading down for an eye ball on the out reefs shortly and will do an update on the baliwaves Face Book page if your interested.
Tomorrow’s Surf Forecast has the charts showing a fairly sharp drop in wave height through the day. Wind wise it’s predicted to be out of the NNE early before turning SE-SSE around midday.
