**** AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE **** Hi crew and thanks for hanging around for the Sunday Session here on the baliwaves.com . Ok I woulda liked to have run those last “beach erosion” photos another day or two but instead I’m going to move them into the Kuta Cam Gallery . Plus I’d be more than happy to hear any feedback on the situation.
This morning I was down doing my Outer Reef surf recon at 6.45am . Wave height between Kuta Reef and Airport Left was still holding in there at 2-4ft but with the wind blowing on-shore outta the WNW @ 5-8knot . While the tide was just starting to run back in from a 0.1mtr Low @ 6.00am. So with that info already in my memory bank I woke up the crew staying with us here at Home Base , loaded the rental and we headed East to Dragon Fly Pt . Well it’s not really called Dragon Fly Pt but anyone who has already surfed at this location will know what I’m talking about. And those of you who haven’t won’t have a clue where I’m talking about… lol.
Anyway we arrived to see some perfect right handers peeling down the Pt in the 2-3ft range and the wind clean and off-shore. There were already half a dozen surfers in the water and another half a doz further up the point. Our crew hit it straight away and as the tide started to push in so did wave height get bigger. It wasn’t long before there were 3-5 footers rocking through . Everyone was stoked with the waves and also with how friendly the local surfers were. I actually asked one of the better surfers there if they minded us tourists turning up to surf their waves. So before any of the “would be locals” start sending me your emails, the boss up there said they are stoked to see westerners there. He even reckons when there gets a bigger turn up of visitors he holds the local surfers back until the visitors get there share of waves. So we’ll be heading back to Dragon Fly Pt in the near future for sure. Oh yeah and my bro Dewa Made also managed to shoot ya’s 10 minutes of Digital Video , which I’ll try and get edited and loaded on baliwaves.com by tonight or tomorrow morning.
Weather wise today on the old 0-10 scale I’d have to giver an 8. Nothing but blue sky with a midday temperature of around 30 degree’s Celsius. The water temp was perfect for boardshorts at 2-3-24 degree’s Celsius.
Something that’s been bugging me and I gotta get it off my chest department; Anyone who’s been in the Tuban area from around the end of last dry season woulda notices tha start of breakwall construction between the airport and as far up the beach to Kuta. This project was concepted and funded by a Japanese company. Their idea was to beautify and extend the beach out further and to protect the beachfront hotels from wave erosion. Well what a fucken joke that has turned out to be and they are not even half way finished building these monstrosities. Since the start, there has been nothing but increased erosion and even less beach on the higher tides. I’m gunna go down there later and show ya’s some photos of the damage to at least 3 major hotels since this project has started. In the past there was erosion but only on those huge huge swells that occur every now and again, and that is normal on any beach anywhere in the World. Now it is happening virtually on every tide bigger than 2.0mtrs. How would a Japanese company know how to contain Mother Ocean and her fury ? Even worse, now the local fishermen in this area cant even park their boats above the high tide line because on any tide bigger than 2.0mtrs there is no beach. (Check the photos in the Kuta Cam Gallery)
Swell forecast for the coming week is for wave height to keep slowly tapering off and by the middle of next week we will be back to head high surf down on the southern end of the island. I think we can also expect the wind to continue blowing light outta the WNW through the morning before swinging to the WSW and increasing in strength after midday.
Changing dollars to Rupiah on the streets of Kuta you’ll find that 1US$=Rp9,050 and 1AU$=Rp8,275 .
