BALI / INDONESIA
14th – 15th August 2019
Hello surfers and lovers of Bali and thanks again for stopping by the baliwaves (Bringing you all the good things from Bali since back in 1999) for our latest news and best possible views on surfing and weather conditions here on the island of the Gods, and the No.1 tropical surfing holiday destination and gateway to Indonesia’s surfing paradise, Bali.
Ok so yesterday the 14th we made another road trip up the far West Coast of Bali. It was pretty well planned out and not just a spur of the moment type of thing, it’s just too far and the traffic to hard core to take a “random run” up there. No photos sorry because I was too busy getting my share of the semi perfect 3-4ft+ waves that were consistently rolling through. Surfing conditions were clean and glassy until the ESE Trade wind made it’s appearance around 11.00am.
Today the 15th and with the Tradey already fresh at 5.00am this morning we thought we’d cruiz back down to the Southern end of the island to grab a few waves at Balangan. Arriving to find wave height in the chest to head high region (2-3ft) with the occasional bigger set waves. Surfing conditions were clean and tidy with a fresh off shore wind and the numbers of surfers in the water negotiable.
I would also like to say a big thank you to the locals (Balangan Wave) who run the surf schools down at Balangan. These guys don’t take the learners out into the line up with the *experienced surfers and create havoc. They prefer to teach their learners in the inside lagoon away from everyone in the proper type of “learner waves”. Unlike the crews that take their hordes of surfers out into the line up at Kuta Reef (for example) and put everyone at risk of danger from out of control learners being pushed into waves over a living coral reef.
Oh we also gave away surfboard No.114 to a young Balinese surfers down at Balangan this morning, thanks to Brian Atlee for donating the board.
Weather wiser today it’s been a top day for the middle of winter that’s for sure. Nothing but blue sky and sunshine all day with a midday top temp of 30 degree’s Celsius and clean off shore wind out of the ESE.
Tomorrows Surf Forecast is calling for a slight bump in wave height and the ESE Trade wind to again kick in early and fresh.
Travel Tip.
Now I constantly hear people everywhere say that when catching a TAXI in Bali make sure it’s a Bluebird. Well I tell you now all taxi’s in Bali are blue and of late there are some real scammers driving them. My advice when getting in a taxi is take a photo of the drivers ID that should be sitting on the dash board, then ask to turn on the meter if it’s not on. Two times now I have rode in taxi’s that have had “TAMPERED METERS” or meters that have been speed ed up to rip you off. By taking the drivers ID photo you are letting them know that your not to be ripped off. Just last night coming home from dinner in Kuta my taxi’s meter was reading Rp100,000 for a normal on average Rp30,000 fare. When I said ok “you have two options, I pay you the 100K but then I take your photo and number plate and report you or I pay Rp25K” The driver shit himself and opted for the 25K option. Please beware of this type of BS going on around Kuta.
Changing dollars to Rupiah on the streets of Bali, –1US$=Rp14.200 –1AU$=Rp9,575 —
NB travelling to Bali then bringing CASH money is the way to go in high denominations. I used an ATM yesterday (Commonwealth Bank) and got a poorly rate of 1AU$=Rp8,990 Plus then there’s the risk of having your card skimmed. Cash is always best !
