BALI SURF & WEATHER REPORT
4th January 2021
Hello surfers and Bali lovers and thanks for dropping into the baliwaves again. Well we are pretty happy to have 2020 behind us now and trying to feel more positive for better times and easier living in 2021. I feel it’s still a long way off, well maybe another 6 months or so at least before we start to see you starting to travel to Bali again. I really want to thank all our friends who have been showing Bali some help and support, my Family included. I really don’t know where we would be without your help.
I finished off the last year with another attempt to bring home some fish with 8 hours in the boat, no luck, just lots of tasty bait fish. That was after a rough start. Firstly waiting for the weather to settle down enough I scrapped my left foot against a small thin piece of bamboo that was sticking out of the sand, didn’t see it just felt it’s bite. Just a little bit of blood that I wiped away and got on with getting my boat out in the water. While catching some bait fish down off Kuta beach around 2kms from our beach I must have bumped the kill switch on my out board or maybe it was vibration over the last 16yrs, it’s never happened before.
Well my engine was dead when I tried to set off to the fishing grounds. I pulled out the spark plugs and cleaned them, checked fuel line and filter all was good but I was dead in the water. So I paddled my 8mtr boat 2kms back to the beach I launched from. When I was 30mtrs off the beach I noticed the kill switch clip was off so put it back on, the engine started first pull and I went fishing. All the time my foot was feeling pretty un comfortable and still bleeding.
When I got back to shore, no fish. I asked a friend with better eyesight than me to check out my foot for splinters. He did dig out a couple of small pieces of bamboo and said it looked pretty clean. So I got back home cleaned and dressed it thinking it was now on the mend. I had a few drinks with a few close friends on New Years arvo so there was no pain. Then I was woke up at 3am on the 1st with a very painful swollen throbbing foot.
So my New years day was an early trip to our local clinic to see a Dr. She dug around in the badly infected wound (no local) and removed another small piece of bamboo that was down deep. Today the 4th at least I can walk almost normally. My wound is not looking good but I still have 2 more days of antibiotics to finish, so hopefully with in the next fortnight I’ll be able to get back in the water again.
I haven’t been out of the house since my trip to the Dr on the 1st due to mobility, but I have been speaking to a few friends on the phone and they reckon I haven’t been missing too much surf wise. This morning here on the Outer Reefs wave height is still only in the 1-1ft+ range between kuta Reef and Airport left. Earlier this morning the wind was light out of the North but now at 11.40am it has swung more to the WNW-NW. The tide has been on the run in with the next tide a 2.1mtr High at 1.42pm.
Tomorrows Surf forecast has been predicted to be pretty much the same as today, small with light and variable wind. Further out we should see a small bump in wave height around the 7-8th and then a better pulse in transit to Bali for the 9-10th.
Weather wise it’s been very ordinary and you could say “it’s good weather for ducks”. Lots of rain and this morning was no different with steady rain through the night and into this morning, Right now the sky is still grey and overcast. Temperature wise it’s still a warm 28 degree’s Celsius, Humidity level is at 80%.
For today’s photo gallery I have found a few old photo’s from the East Coast of Bali, mostly from Serangan and another used to be semi secret spot before the surf schools moved in there as well. Serangan used to be one of my favorite early morning places for a surf. Good quality left and right handers and you could always count on a good uncrowded dawn patrol on both ends of the tide. Serangan was always under rated by a lot of surfers but not in my book. Unfortunately with the island been sold to an overseas Corporation and closed to the general public, local and international. Now days the only way you can access the waves of Serangan is by hiring a boat at 10 dollars a head. So this year it’s only been the very privileged that can surf there I guess. I’m just so glad of many good memories surfing and hanging out at the local warungs over the years.
On the Bali Corona Virus scene, nothing really has changed except the number of new cases in Bali and all graphs and stats for Indonesia steadily rising. Still no news on the start of the vaccination program except that hopefully it will commence later this month.
Some travel news I copied off the Bali Covid 19 Face book group this morning. https://www.facebook.com/groups/BaliCovid
“IMMIGRATION AND TRAVEL – Changing Rapidly
· A total of 9,521 hotel rooms are now available in Jakarta for repatriation quarantine. The full list is in the google Travel Doc link below.
· Expected policy news this week. Special holiday travel requirements are due to expire 8 Jan (Friday) and news on any changes or their continuation is expected this week.
· Based on the expansion of quarantine hotels in Jakarta, I would expect this policy to be extended past the 14 Jan ending date.
On Monday 28 December, a new national Surat Edaran No. 4/2020 was issued which effectively closes the borders for all international visitors from 1-14 January. Indonesian citizens and holders of KITAS/KITAP visas are exempt but must undergo 5 days of quarantine in Jakarta. The English translation: https://www.imigrasi.go.id/…/22-20-06-Circular_Letter…
Travelers will be PCR tested again on arrival. With a negative result, Indonesians will undertake a quarantine for 5 days in a quarantine accommodation provided by the government while foreigners are obliged to undertake a quarantine for 5 days in a hotel that is designated by the government at their own cost.
After 5 days of quarantine a PCR test will be repeated, and if the result is negative both Indonesian and foreign travelers will be permitted to continue their journey”
Ok everyone sorry for the drawn out up date today but just wanted to fill you in a little. I’ll try and get down the beach later this afternoon if my foot is up to it and do a video surf and weather up date. So keep an eye on our Instagram, Face book and Twitter accounts for that. Have a good one and talk to you again soon.
