We had a huge day yesterday travelling way up the West Coast chasing the best waves that Bali had on offer, and scored nicely. So after such a fun and satisfying day out with some great company there was no chance of me spoiling that by spending a couple of hours on the computer. There ya go, I’m just like any other surfer I guess. So I’ve been editing this morning and got a colorful photo gallery that Ketut shot down at Uluwatu on the 1st and featuring in today’s report. I’ll see how I go after lunch and maybe.. get another afternoon report and new photo gallery from yesterday the 2nd, no promises but I’ll do my best.
Yesterday the 2nd and we were all stoked to pull into the Dekis Warung at Balian to see super clean 4ft high (well over head) sets break in their standard A frame formation. There was only a handful of surfers in the water at 6.45am so we took our time and had a quick cuppa to sharpen us up before suiting up and hitting it for a fun 2hr session. The crowd did grow to around 30-35 surfers scattered through the line up but mostly older surfers like us and a few learners thrown into the mix. The drive home was a bit slow but a nice little road side break for a few sates (local Balinese street food) put us back in fine form to complete the day.
Balian, ok we all know there has been shark incidents with surfers at this place, not fatalities just some nasty nips from mostly small sharks under a mtr in length. All us surfers know there are sharks in the ocean, it is their home not ours. Any surfer worth their salt knows this. We go surfing with this knowledge in our heads but we don’t let it make us over paranoid, but we are aware and except it. Now there are a few steps we can take to avoid or reduce the risks of an incident with a shark at known sharky locations.
- Don’t surf in dirty colored water eg after heavy rains
- Don’t surf on dusk or dawn.
- Don’t wear flashy jewelery or watches that may attract the interest of a shark
- Don’t spash around to much
- Don’t pee in the surf
- Don’t use the color yellow
- if you get a cut and are bleeding go in.
- Follow these basic tips and you can cut down the risk of having an encounter.
Today the 3rd and our 6.30am surf check on the Outer Reefs of Tuban was showing some fun little waves in the 2-3ft class between Kuta Reef and Airport left. Airport Left was looking the goods with some chest to maybe even slightly over head set waves. But it also looked like it may have been a little tricky to get one to yourself with close to 40 surfers packed in there. The tide was running in at the time so Middle Reef was a bit to fat being optimum on the lower end of the tide. Not much happening on Kuta reef and only a handful of surfers out there.
Weather wise this morning here in Tuban / South Kuta it’s another classic Bali type day. Pristine bluest of the blue colored sky and right now at 12.00noon it’s a very comfortable 29C with the humidity at 74%. Wind direction is coming out of the ESE at 13-15km/h.
The next tide today in Bali will be a 0.14mtr reef exposing low at 4.21pm
Tomorrow’s Surf Forecast has the wave modals showing a little spike in wave height with the period also jumping from today’s 12-14 seconds up to 19 seconds through the morning. The wind is also predicted to be out of the ESE and a little lighter than today.
