Balian Surf Report – Tuesday 29th September 2026
We were up the West Coast at Balian yesterday morning and there were some decent waves getting through. Wave height was sitting around 3 to 5 foot, and a light offshore wind had the river mouth clean and tidy from the first check. It was sunny with light winds about, and the crowd sat somewhere around 20 to 30 surfers spread between the lefts and rights, so there were still plenty of waves to go around if you were willing to move about a bit.
Conditions stayed smooth and clean through the early part of the morning, with the offshore holding until about 9am. From there a light onshore started to creep in and put a bit of texture on the faces, though nothing too major. Conditions held up better than expected and there were still fun waves about until around 11am, which is roughly when most of the crew had had enough and started heading in. The swell had a bit of period behind it, so the better sets came through with some push and were lining up nicely across the take off area. The traffic on the return drive wasn’t the greatest!!
Weather & Tides
Right now it’s sitting around 25C in the air with the water around 23C, and there’s a light easterly wind about this morning. Tide wise today the water has been filling in toward a high around 12:15pm, then it drains right out to a big low around 5:45pm this evening. The next high is due just after midnight, followed by a low near 6:35am tomorrow morning, so the first check will be on a low tide which can leave the inside a bit shallow until the water starts to fill back in toward a high around 12:45pm.
Surf Forecast
Looking ahead, the swell is holding fairly steady at around 3 foot for Thursday and Friday, with the period stretching out to around 15 seconds, so there should still be a few waves about with some decent sets mixed in. Winds are looking variable, so early mornings are the best bet before the local wind picks up. It is nothing too major but still worth a look, especially if you can time the drive up the West Coast to beat the crowd. Check the swell forecast for the full picture before you head up.
