5 April 2010, Canggu-Bali: At Canggu Beach today in the Oakley Pro 2010, Bali’s Made Awan staged a come-from-behind charge to post the highest wave score of the day and of the entire event, 9 points out of a possible 10, to push 2008 ISC Champ and current WQS surfer Dede Suryana from West Java into second spot and hold him there until time ran out, becoming the winner of the first event of the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour 2010 season.
Awan receives a Rp 10 million cash prize from Oakley as well as now sits in the number one spot on the ISC Tour rankings by racking up a whopping 3,000 championship points to start his year off with a bang. He also received the Coca-Cola Best Maneuver Award for getting the highest wave score of the event, nabbing an extra Rp 1 million prize money as a bonus.
Back on the beach, drenched in a combination of Coca-Cola and San Miguel Light courtesy of the sponsors and his friends he was ecstatic, saying, “I won…thanks my God I won… I’m number one! The waves were so good and I had so much fun out there. In the beginning I was so nervous and fell, but then after a couple of waves I just settled down and waited for the best waves. When I heard I scored a 9 for that wave, I knew I had a chance to win.” And win he did, against a very formidable opponent in Dede Suryana.
Suryana had jumped out to an early lead and soon had Awan on the ropes with a 6.75 and an 8.0, but then Awan got going with a 7.25 and then his huge 9-point wave, leaving Suryana needing an 8.35. A few minutes later Awan picked off another beauty to post an 8.25, thus requiring Suryana to score an even bigger 9.35. With just seconds left on the clock Suryana took off, boosting and landing a huge air, but couldn’t add the couple of big maneuvers to it that would have gotten him the almost perfect 10 that he needed. Suryana was philosophical about the loss and had a good takeaway from it saying, “I just finished doing three WQS comps where the waves were nowhere near as good as these and I didn’t do very well, so to be surfing good waves here and getting a second place finish has boosted my confidence back up.”
“Last year I was up against Awan back at my home break of Cimaja in West Java, and I beat him just near the end of the heat, so I guess we are even now”, he said laughing. “The next ISC comp is in Sanur, so it will be very interesting because that is almost Awan’s home break. He is surfing really well and is a great competitor, so I’m happy for him that he won. We’ll see what happens next time though!” he added.
Suryana goes home with Rp 5 million and 2,750 ISC Championship points.
This was the fifth and final day of the Oakley Pro 2010, a six star rated Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour sanctioned event, the first of the 2010 Tour season, which took place at Canggu Beach on the West Coast of Bali just a few minutes north of Kuta. 64 of Indonesia’s best Pro surfers as well as 11 Masters (35 and older) surfers competed for prestige, prize money and points in some of the best waves in the world.
Prior to the Pro Final, four of Indonesia’s best Master (35 years and older) surfers took to the perfect Canggu waves to compete in their final. Coming back to the beach in first place was Wayan “Ompong” Budayasa, competing in his very first Master’s Division event. He also competed in the Pro Division but failed to advance beyond Round 3.
He was on a clear mission today in the 25 minute final, charging aggressively from the opening horn, racking up first a 6.75 and then capping it off with an 8.0 to best runner up Ketut Juliarta’s 6.0 and 6.6. Coming in third place was Made Lapur, and rounding out the quartet was Ida Bagus Rai in fourth.
“The waves were so good in this final, so fun to surf in conditions like this, almost like a free surf. I’m really happy to win in my first year as a Master…hope I can keep it up!” said Budayasa after his win.
The next stop on the Coca-Cola ISC Tour will be the Rusty Rumble in Da Jungle at Sanur Beach with a waiting period starting on April 26 and ending on May 16.
