**** AFTERNOON SURF UP-DATE **** Howdy crew and thanks for waiting around for the latest baliwaves.com Bali surf ‘n weather rundown and I suppose we should get straight into her hey. I made my first surf recon around 6.30am and that was of the Outer Reefs of Tuban (250yrds from Home Base Bali). Wave height was still holding in at 2-3ft+ between Kuta Reef and Airport Left but the wind was pretty gusty outta the WNW, around 8knots worth. But my mind was still set on getting down to Uluwatu and seeing what was on. I arrived down there at 9.00am to see 3-4ft+ waves breaking on all 3 main sections and surfing conditions were clean enough. I set up my gear and then got ready for what I though was gunna be a long day, seeing as there was only a handful of mediocre surfers in the water. I was shooting Digital Video and video doesn’t lie. But sometime around 10.00am just as the tide was starting to run back out low and behold Mick Fanning, Rob Machado, Bobby Martinez and Rizal Tanjung just to name some, hit the water. I’d heard these boys were in town destroying waves where ever they surfed and today, Uluwatu was there pleasure. I was stoked and lucky to see these Professionals in the water free surfing, apparantly the whole crew is off to Sumatra tomorrow on a covert surfing mission. These current images I’ve thrown up for ya’s are just some lowly ol frame grabs from the 16 minutes worth of mini DV but ya may have to wait until a bit later tonight to check out the video clips. I packed up at 1.30pm but by the look of things the Racetrack was going to be producing some nice waves through til sun down. Weather wise today it’s basically just been another hot and sunny day with the midday temperature reaching 30 degree’s Celcius outta the shade. I don’t know what the water temp was like today down at Uluwatu but I sure didn’t hear any surfers complaining about it being to cold. Over on the island of Sumbawa the boys have been scoring waves as well. Made sent through his sms surf report from lakey Peak and said that wave height has jumped into the 3-5ft range on the Peak this morning and surfing conditions were clean and glassy at 8.00am. Only 5 surfers in the water sampling the perfect left and rights of Lakey Peak and across the channel at Lakey Pipe the line-up was empty. But Made said he saw at least 20 surfers taking on the 1.5km walk down to Periscope’s , and why wouldn’t there be, with the tide up and 3-5 foot of swell hitting the shelf. The total number of visiting surfers in the Lakey area has jumped back to around 50. Ray from the Kandui Surfing Resort in the Mentawai island chain of Sumatra has also sent us a new report as follows. 29 march 07 Winds were light this morning and our swell had dropped off a little more. We headed straight for Burgerworld figuring that Nipusi was too small today. There was one boat on it as we arrived and the wind had come up from the north at about 5 mph. Not the best wind for Burgerworld as the side-offshore wind into the barrel has no land mass for miles in front of it, so any wind from that direction creates a little chop up the face. But it looked like a day that would have more of a variable or south wind (clear, sunny skies) so we decided to go out and hope for a wind switch. Sure enough, a half hour later or so the winds started dieing and all of a sudden it was glassy. The waves were about a foot overhead and spinning all the way down the reef. So much fun! We surfed for hours. Even when a couple of more boats showed up, there were plenty of waves. The winds came up light out of the south for awhile, but for the most part conditions were epic. We surfed until we couldn’t paddle. The winds turned light west (perfect for Burgerworld) just as we got ready to leave, but we just didn’t have any energy left. The winds stayed light west for the afternoon session and a few of the boys had a good time out at 4 Bob s where, again, conditions were epic. Too bad the waves were not bigger, only about chest high on the big ones out there. The rest of the guys were content to enjoy a ripping session at the bar where happy hour (4-6) was going off! Hoping what swell we have will hang in there. The forecasters are calling for a little something to come in tomorrow.
